Library announces annual summer reading program

This year’s theme for the summer reading program at the Anderson Public Library is “One World, Many Stories!”
The summer reading programs for the toddlers will be June 27 from 10-10:30 a.m., July 11 and July 18. All toddlers programs will be held at Anderson Public Library.
The summer reading programs for the preschool will begin June 27 with special guest “Doctor Phineas A. Bucket.”

Childcare organization receives ‘star’ rating

Abundant Life Christian Learning Treehouse is participating in the Stars for Kids Now Program, the organization announced.
The organization has been awarded a three star rating, indicating that the program is seeking quality standards beyond the requirements for facility licensure.
Star ratings are based on factors associated with good outcomes for young children such as staff to child ratios, program curriculum and staff education and training.

Hospital hosts cancer lecture June 29

In partnership with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Frankfort Regional Medical Center and the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center Affiliate Network are hosting an educational program on “Improving Treatments for Blood Cancers” by John Hayslip, MD, MSCR, assistant professor with the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, Division of Hematology, Oncology and Blood and Marrow Transplantation.

Annual Relay poker run is Saturday

The ninth-annual Drury Brothers Relay for Life Poker Run is scheduled for June 25, organizers announced.
Local bikers will meet at the former Shell gas station near the intersection of US 127 and the Bluegrass Parkway at 10 a.m.
The actual poker run will begin at noon at Willie A’s, 201 North Depot St., Lebanon.
Cost is $10 per bike, which includes ride entrance and one poker card. Additional cards are $5 each.
The best poker hand will win $200. Second place will be $50 and there will be a $10 prize for the worst hand.

Woman indicted for felony in Frankfort

Tina Kincaid, 46, of Lawrenceburg was indicted June 15 on one count of misusing electronic information, as well as one count of being a persistent felony offender.
“She’s somebody we’ve had some history with in the past,” Larry Cleveland, commonwealth attorney for the 48th judicial district, said.
According to Cleveland, Kincaid attempted to use stolen personal, blank checks in a Frankfort Walmart to obtain merchandise totaling about $100 or less.

Local woman involved in fatal Woodford wreck

A Lawrenceburg woman was involved in an accident last Tuesday night that claimed the lives of a Versailles couple, according to reports.
A vehicle driven by Cody Doan, 31, of Lawrenceburg struck another vehicle in the side at the intersection of Falling Springs Boulevard and McCowans Ferry Road in Woodford County, killing Barbara Drury, 68.
Drury’s husband, William, died Saturday as a result of his injuries.
Doan was transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, according to police

Event raises more than $80,000 for the American Cancer Society

2011 Anderson County Relay for Life

The 10th annual Relay for Life event may have been interrupted by a thunderstorm, but spirits couldn’t be dampened during the June 17-18 American Cancer Society fundraiser held in the city park.
Derek Ruble, a volunteer with Relay for Life, estimates that about 750-1,000 people attended the event
“In my mind, one of the most important things is that we honored 121 survivors,” Ruble said via e-mail.

Fair, horse show gallops into town

The 139th annual Lawrenceburg Fair and Horse Show will kick off its week of horse shows, pageants and carnival rides this Saturday, June 25 with the gates opening at noon at the fairgrounds.
The Fair and Horse Show, set to run June 25 through July 2, features a variety of entertainment, competitions and attractions.
The Kent Family Magic Circus will perform two shows every night at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. through July 2.

Relay candles celebrate hope

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is a celebration of survivorship and remembrance that raises funds for and awareness of the fight against cancer. The Luminaria Ceremony is the soul of Relay for Life.
After sunset at each of the more than 3,000 Relay for Life events held nationwide, luminaria candles are lit and left glowing throughout the night to remind everyone of the incredible importance of their contributions. The candles bear the names of those who have battled cancer.
