4-H program teaches children about rockets
Up, up, and away!

As part of its 4-H summer fun program, the Anderson County extension office held a rocketry adventures class last Friday for children 9 and older.
Students were taught simple physics and aero science before putting their knowledge to work to create bottle rockets, which they launched later in the day.
Each student could individualize his or her own rocket once they were given simple materials that included duct tape, 2-liter bottles and sand to weigh the bottle down.

ACHS alumna earns
law degree
Shana Bowen, a 2006 Anderson County High School graduate, recently graduated from Thomas Goode Jones School of Law in Montgomery, Ala., earning her Juris Doctorate degree.
Upon graduation Bowen was inducted into the Public Interest Law Society and awarded the Merit of Pro Bono achievement for her volunteer work in the legal community, according to a press release. She was the president of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity and was an active board member for the Women’s Legal Society and Student Bar Association.

Teachers voice opinions about working conditions in state survey
Anderson County teachers love where they work, according to a statewide survey that asks staff to comment anonymously on their district’s teaching conditions.
The Kentucky Department of Education released survey results of the New Teacher Center’s Teaching, Empowering, Leading and Learning (TELL) Kentucky survey last Wednesday.
About 90.57 percent of Anderson County teachers — 240 out of 265 educators —completed the spring 2013 survey compared to the state’s 86.86 percent, according to the TELL survey website.

Library to be named in fourth grader’s honor
Ward crowns students ‘kings’ and ‘queens’ of reading
Emma B. Ward students were recognized and rewarded for their Accelerated Reading accomplishments May 21, according to a news release.
“The school wide reading program encourages students to read books and take quizzes on those books in order to meet point goals set by their teachers,” Ward accelerated reading organizers said in the release.
Ward students earned a total of 20,950 points for the year. The boy and girl from each grade who earned the most points were crowned AR King and Queen.
