Canning a great way to preserve meat
Canning meat is included in the food preservation workshop that I will be teaching April 13.
Tommy Yankey, Extension agent for agriculture and natural resources, will be teaching gardening basics during this first session April 13.
The meat will be processing while we learn about gardening.
I can meat because I’m a tent camper. There’s only so long fresh meat will keep in a cooler. I get tired of canned chili, tuna and salmon.

Questions answered on vehicle taxes, license plates
Can I find out the amount that I paid last year in vehicle taxes?
Before you call our office, look at your current registration receipt. The tax information is printed on it. If for some reason you don’t have it the registered owner (name on the title) can obtain this information.
Our office doesn’t give out tax information over the phone due to the personal nature of the information and the lack of a way to verify the identification of the registered owner.

Spring moving in on us very quickly
Coming home from work and still having daylight is such a treat. The new norm is taking the dogs for a walk right after I get home.
It sure works the kinks out and we all love it.
We’ve been rambling all over the farm, looking for signs of wildlife and keeping an eye on everything showing new life.
Inside the orchard fence, the hardy kiwi look like they are ready to form up buds. My cherry tree is budding and so is a peach and pear.
The phlox is greening up and my roses are putting on new growth.

Create safety plans for severe weather
March 2 was the first anniversary of the devastating tornadoes that struck Kentucky last year. Governor Steve Beshear has declared March to be Severe Weather Awareness Month. If you are prepared ahead of time for severe weather, then you won’t be as stressed when the tornado sirens sound.

Detection is key to colorectal cancer
March is Colorectal Awareness Month, providing an opportunity nationwide to promote awareness of colorectal cancer prevention by early detection.
Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of death in the United States. It is treatable and preventable, although colorectal cancer is a common and lethal disease. In the United States, there are approximately 150,000 new cases diagnosed a year.

Spring headed our way with full force
Whew, did someone push fast forward on my life’s remote control?
This last week flew by and it’s because I’ve been on the road. I’ve been commuting to Louisville every day for training and it sure gives me the opportunity to watch the wild life, including some behind the wheel.

Attacking bed bugs expensive, tedious
Last week I had a call from someone who remembered my column on bed bugs from last August.
They had a serious infestation and wanted to know what could be done and what it would cost. The answer is bad news – lots of work and lots of expense.
Bed bugs were found at one of the Department of Transportation offices in Frankfort. Although it was reported that very few bed bugs found, the entire floor was treated the second time around.

On my mind: Judd’s voice needed in Senate
Will someone please wake me up?
I just had a dream that Ashley Judd was running for Mitch McConnell’s Senate seat.
OMG! It was not a dream; perhaps I was just in a dozing state of denial as it appears she is taking this challenge more serious every day.
Rumor is she recently met with Democrat insiders in Louisville to seriously discuss the possibility. She’s also met with New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Democrat bean counters to conduct some poll research.

UK does more than create college grads
Earlier this month I visited the Merchandising, Apparel and Textile Department at the University of Kentucky. The purpose of the visit was professional development including an update on current research. Feed appetite for gardening cravings online
You know how it is when you walk into a kitchen and smell something wonderful cooking? Your mouth immediately starts to water. That’s kind of how I am when my little sprouts start to peek out of the soil. I want more! To satisfy that craving, I go online.
