COLUMN: Liberal Olbermann will be missed on MSNBC

By Joan Burke

A few weeks ago my husband and I sat watching one of our favorite TV shows, Keith Olbermann’s Countdown, on MSNBC.
Mr. Olbermann matter-of-factly stated that this would be his last broadcast of Countdown, gave a brief summary of his six years there, thanked a few people, and went on to read a bit of James Thurber.

COLUMN: Warning: Oral piercing is not as safe as you think

Piercing, like tattooing, is just one of today’s popular forms of body art and self-expression.
Piercing may seem daring, cool and totally safe because some celebrities use piercing to flaunt their particular style or attitude. But piercing the tongue, lips, cheeks or uvula (the tiny tissue that hangs at the back of the throat) is not as safe as some would have you believe. That’s because the mouth’s moist environment — home to huge amounts of breeding bacteria — is an ideal place for infection.

COLUMN: Young teacher was an inspiration

By Shannon Brock

Monday morning at the office came with a piece of news I certainly didn’t want to hear.
Rhonda Napier, a local 29-year-old Head Start teacher, was found dead in her home on Saturday.
No foul play is suspected, but, so far, no one can quite put their finger on why she died.
According to friends and Coroner Dr. Mark Tussey, she’d been experiencing flu-like symptoms, but healthy 29-year-olds just don’t die from the flu.

COLUMN: Gear yourselves and your plants up for spring

By Cheryl Steenerson

We’re done. Bring on the warmth. The Vernal Equinox is only 32 days away and I know I’m not alone when I say, “Come on spring.”
The Old Farmer’s Almanac says we’ll get a couple of dustings in March, but by then it will be warm enough not to bother us. Time marches on.
The hours in the day seem to whiz by even faster as the sun rises in the sky. Have you ever thought of what it would be like if we didn’t have hours in the day? There was a time when folks counted only days, not hours and minutes.

COLUMN: Campaign sign restrictions violate First Amendment

Editor’s note: The proposed ordinance referenced below has since been dropped by Judge-Executive John Wayne Conway.

The proposed fiscal court ordinance restricting the displays of campaign signs is yet another example of government intrusion that must be stopped.
First and foremost, this violates our First Amendment rights to freely express our opinions. Secondly, this ordinance exposes on a local level the ideology that government is the solution to our complaints.

COLUMN: Farm, commercial vehicle tags renewed next month

As we approach our busiest month of the year, I thought that the column this month should be on licensing and transfer of vehicles.
As clerk, I see many people who aren’t aware of some very important issues that can arise with each of these procedures.
About a month before your vehicle tags expire, you will receive a card from the state with the Anderson County Clerk’s contact information on it. This card is to remind you of your expiration date, provides you with the amount that you owe and can be used for tax purposes.

COLUMN: Growing up, growing out

By Shannon Brock

One morning, while I was still in college, I rolled out of bed in my dorm room to start getting ready for class.
I fixed my hair in the mirror, threw on some makeup, picked out a shirt and pulled on a pair of jeans, but, wait — they didn’t zip.
I quickly reached for another pair, but they didn’t even squeeze over my hips.

COLUMN: ‘Squash’ winter, it’s almost planting time

By Cheryl Steenerson

Every day holds a little more sunshine. We really are gaining more daylight as the days march along, giving us a little taste of the summer to come. We’re all ready.
Those who grow from seeds are already getting dirt under their nails. Well, technically it’s potting soil, not dirt.
It’s good to feel like a gardener again, even if the grass is a little on the “white” side.

COLUMN: Mouth guards — equipment to protect the smile

It’s easy to take some things for granted until they’re suddenly gone. Have you ever thought about how it would feel if you lost one or two of your front teeth? You’d probably avoid smiling. It would be uncomfortable talking with someone face-to-face. It wouldn’t be easy pronouncing certain words. And how about eating an apple? Until your teeth are gone, you might not miss them.

Whistling a different tune about HB 196

COLUMN: City would be wise to join broadband parade

By Ben Carlson

Now that the South Anderson Water District has allowed a wireless Internet provider to place antennas on its water towers, the city would be wise to consider allowing antennas on its water towers, too.
Once the water district signs off on the deal, businesses outside of the city will have a distinct advantage over those inside, simply because they have a less expensive, more versatile way to connect their businesses to the world.
Businesses in the city will remain hostage to hardwire applications, and in this day and age that’s simply not acceptable.
