If you want to be a good writer, you have to read good writing.
Professors and advisers preached this message over and over throughout my four years at the University of Kentucky.
It makes total sense. Kind of like how the saying, “You’re only as good as the company you keep,” makes sense.
Surrounding yourself with good people makes you want to be a good person or, at the very least, lets you see good examples on a regular basis.

Well, the bug has hit. Even though it’s freezing cold outside this bug survives, some might say it thrives, during the cold winter months. It’s the gardening bug.
I know, because I have it and many of you do as well. The questions have started coming in about when to start seeds and my answer is that it’s too early.
Now is the time to plan, though. The seed starting will come soon. Planning your seed starting time starts with what you want to grow. As promised, I’m going to lay out the agronomics of the basic vegetables we grow.

Having the flu can be dangerous for anyone. But it is extra risky for people with diabetes or other chronic health problems.
In general, every person with diabetes needs a flu shot each year. Talk with your doctor about having a flu shot. Flu shots do not give 100 percent protection, but they do make it much harder for you to catch the flu for about 6 months.
For extra safety, it’s a good idea for the people you live with or spend a lot of time with to get a flu shot, too. You are less likely to get the flu if the people around you don’t have it.

When I was in middle school on a band trip, my friend and I stole some bobby pins from a local dime store. A store detective spotted us from about 500 yards away. He marched us up to the front of the store and bawled us out in front of about 100 people. Or so it seemed. I was mortified. But he let us go. I never stole anything again.

Column as I see ’em …
Now that 2010 is in the books, a shout out goes to each and every one of our readers and advertisers for making the year an outstanding one.
It’s no secret that nationally, newspapering is a tough nut to crack these days. Large daily metro papers have really taken it on the chin, losing readers and advertisers at an alarming rate.

My friends are amazing. Throughout every stage of my life, I’ve been blessed to have friends that I’m sure I couldn’t live without.
Between Christmas and New Year’s, I took a much-needed vacation and was able to catch up with several of those amazing friends, and I even rediscovered a few gems that reminded me how blessed I’ve been to keep such wonderful people in my life.

OK, repeat after me, two sticks, two sticks.
That’s how I’m going to try to remember to write 2011, not 2010, anymore.
Writing the date on something comes almost automatically, but when it first gets here it seems to take us a while to adjust and stop writing the old year. Hopefully, the two sticks mantra will help.
Each new year offers an opportunity for a fresh start. It’s a time to make changes in our lives, or at least to make resolutions for change. But change is hard, usually. Habits are hard to change.

Well, this is my last column in The Anderson News for 2010. I should make it memorable. I should do a highlight of events that have affected our lives in the past year. I should, but my memory stinks.

With the year about to come to a close, I thought I would get brutally honest with myself — and with you, readers — and evaluate my “New Year’s resolutions” column from this time last year.
Back then, I revealed four New Year’s resolutions and said, “by my calculations, with all the resolutions I’ve broken in the past, I’m due to make a resolution that will actually stick.”
Well, if you want to look at it literally, I’m a success — I made a single resolution that actually stuck.
