When Kentucky’s spring wild turkey season opens April 16, hunters should get plenty of opportunities to match wits with the older, experienced gobblers that make the sport so challenging and exciting.

Kentucky anglers who like sauger, white bass or muskellunge need to plan a trip to the Kentucky River in the next couple of weeks. Population sampling on the Kentucky River conducted by fishery biologists with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources over the past several weeks show healthy populations of white bass, sauger and muskellunge.

My column last month stirred up a little conversation that leads me to address it a bit further this month. Some outdoorsmen, including me, had a beef over the deal with Missouri to swap 150 of our eastern Kentucky elk for crappie.
Yes, elk for fish.

Success can often breed controversy. Once someone or something becomes a “success” it seems the eyes of the world are firmly fixed and the successful entity is thoroughly monitored while those same monitoring eyes wait anxiously for its downfall. With so many cell phones, pictures, videos, computers and other electronic means out there it seems impossible to “escape” attention or “get away with anything” when an action or actions are found to be amiss.

Kentucky’s 2010-11 white-tailed deer season ended over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend with archers posting two all-time harvest records.
“There was an archery record set for the month of January (2,683 deer) and for the season (16,636 deer),” said David Yancy, deer biologist for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.
Archery hunters harvested 413 antlerless deer and 253 antlered bucks over the holiday weekend.

I really try to stick to topic when writing my monthly column but when events occur like the Arizona shooting earlier this month it’s hard to not voice my concerns. Really, in my opinion, I’m still within the bounds of an outdoor column due to the gun-related issues at hand so I’ll ramble a minute. This also gives you the freedom to continue or move on to the next page and read something else.

Hunting strategies are different, calling is not as critical to success, and birds are often in big flocks, concentrating on local food sources – everything about fall wild turkey hunting makes it more challenging than the spring season.
The key to success in the spring is getting close to gobbling toms and seducing them into gun range with subtle hen calls such as clucks, purrs and yelps. Communication between the sexes is a major part of the mating ritual.
