Bearcats, J-town set to meet after storm

By John Herndon

This was one time when football teams did not want the wind at their backs.

Or any other direction for that matter.

Anderson County got an unexpected week off last Friday when the Bearcats' game with Jeffersontown was a victim of the remnants of Hurricane Ike.

The massive wind storm created the largest power outage in Louisville history, including the 1974 tornado, and prompted cancellation of all Jefferson County public school extra-curricular activities last week.

An Unsung Hero

By John Herndon

If there is a poster boy for how football has changed over the last 40 years, it has to be Mitch Crawford.

Standing in at 6-feet and weighing 150 pounds as the quarterback who directed the Anderson County attack in 1968, Crawford would look almost frail compared to current signal caller Jacob Russell's 6-4, 215-pound frame.

But the size difference is small compared to the game itself.

"If Coach (Ray) Hager had run a shotgun offense like a lot of teams do today, we could have really put up some numbers," Crawford says.

Lady Cats express fury in Boyle tournament

By John Herndon

Heav'n has no Rage, like Love to Hatred turn'd,

Nor Hell a Fury, like a Woman scorn'd.

- William Congreve, The Mourning Bride, 1697

Sorry, AC - Boyle 3 - 1;

Playing at home I like Boyle 4-0.

- Posters on KyPreps.com, predicting the Anderson County-Boyle County soccer match, Sept. 19, 2008.

DANVILLE - It really wasn't Boyle County's fault that Anderson County has not been feeling the love lately.

COLUMN: Game cancellation is a time to be thankful for local officials

By John Herndon

Thoughts that popped up while trying to make contingency Friday night plans.

During the uncertainty that surrounded the eventual postponement of the Anderson County-Jeffersontown football game, I developed an even greater appreciation for those who run the Anderson County school system.

We don't always agree, but they are right on the money in resisting the misguided urge to make a blanket rule canceling all sports and extra curricular activities when weather causes school to be canceled.

Lifelong lessons

By John Herndon

Paul Wright never grabbed the headlines as a member of the 1968 Anderson County football team, but he was still an important part of the team.

A lineman, Wright saw most of his playing time on special teams, but also saw action as an offensive and defensive tackle on a team that is undoubtedly at or near the top in Anderson football history.

Football Full Circle

By John Herndon

Football went from the days of the Fearsome Foursome to Peyton Manning-Marvin Harrison and back Friday.

On a night when Anderson County honored the 1968 Central Kentucky Conference champions - "We gave up just 70 points in 11 games," those Bearcats like to say - in a pre-game ceremony, the current Bearcats and Grant County put on a can-you-top-this first half of offensive pyrotechnics but it was an old-fashioned, control-the-line defense that turned a video game look-alike into a 58-21 Anderson rout.

These Lady Bearcats are good!

By John Herndon

LEXINGTON - They won't say it publicly, but there have to be times when those closest to the girls' soccer program must want to just scream, "Hey, we are good!"

But Saturday night, they would have just been talking to themselves.

Finding a more appropriate sports venue than Jon Akers Stadium at Lexington's Dunbar High School to serve as the backdrop for the 21st-ranked Lady Bearcats Saturday night would not be impossible, but it would be close.

Kind of like finding dollar gas these days.

By John Herndon

Updated Thursday, Sept. 18, 11 p.m.

Anderson County High School athletic director Rick Sallee has announced that the Bearcats football game with Jeffersontown, originally scheduled for Sept. 19, has been rescheduled for Friday, Sept. 26 in Jeffersontown.

Several teams with district games affected by Sunday's windstorm have shuffled schedules, allowing the Anderson-Jeffersontown game to be played next week. See the Sept. 24 edition of The Anderson News for a complete report.
