Bearcats' best season?
Anderson County sports fans have posed the same question repeatedly over the last few weeks.
"Has there ever been a better year in the history of the school than this one?"
Wow. We are taking in a LOT of territory but as my friend Mike Fields pointed out in Friday's Lexington Herald-Leader, there were only three schools in Kentucky that had 10 wins in football and 20 wins in boys' and girls' basketball and 20 wins in baseball and softball.

Catfish, and a turtle for your stew pot
Catfish, catfish and more catfish. The first Saturday of June sure brought out the "yungins" with fishing poles trying their hands at catching some "bigguns."
The annual D.A.R.E. fishing day was held at Hope Community Church lake much to the pleasure of over 100 kids, 15 and younger. Hunter is a year too old now, so Suzanne and I loaded up the poles and tackle to see what she could catch.

Mudcats classic underway, schedule revised
UPDATED, Friday, June 20, 8:40 a.m.--The Central Kentucky Mudcat baseball classic is underway with a revised schedule. All games are being played at the Anderson County High School field. The Kentucky Grizzlies, based in Frankfort, led the Mudcats 3-0 before rain stopped the contest in the fifth inning Thursday night. Montgomery County defeated the Morse Mustangs of Danville in Thursday's other game.
Because of a late entry to the tournament, the schedule changed after the June 18 print edition of The Anderson News went to press. The new schedule is: Friday, June 20

Cats roll past Meade in summer action
The calendar and thermometer both said June but Anderson County basketball was going strong last Thursday as the Bearcats routed visiting Meade County 71-52 in a summer league game.
While Anderson coach Glen Drury keeps not statistics during off-season play, it was easy to see that the Bearcats were playing very well against a team that won 20 games last year. But the game also underscored that summer league games are not the same as the varsity action in late February and March.
"Their coach told me that they were missing one of their better players," Drury said.

Bearcat fans had plenty to cheer about in 2007-08
Growing up, I was an avid Cat fan...well, a UK Wildcat fan, that is. You see, in the years just before the current Bearcat athletes were born, I was a Mercer County Lady Scottie, and I would dare say that back then, I would never think of cheering for the Anderson Bearcats.
In life, however, change is inevitable. The Scotties do not even exist anymore, but more importantly, seven years ago, I was hired as an English teacher at Anderson County High School.

More than a historian
On those occasions when W.J. Smith shared just a bit of his knowledge of Anderson County history, I learned about Ducky Holmes, Rhoda Kavanaugh, Paul McBrayer or the Lawrenceburg A's. I came to know at least a bit about anyone else that had been a part of the local sports scene.
I learned about a swallowed tongue. Seven overtimes. And how sports teams at Anderson County High School became known as the Bearcats.
Most of all, W.J. Smith reminded me time and again that sports, even when taken very seriously, are about fun.

Season Permits
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will hold a supplemental sales period for people who failed to get an alligator hunt permit or those who would like to return a permit with the hope of trying to obtain another.
This additional sales period will help reduce any inconveniences caused by a computer programming glitch during the initial sales period on Tuesday, June 3.

Caged Inferno 8 set for Saturday
A pair of mixed martial arts title fights will be headlining Caged Inferno 8 to be held Saturday, June 14, at Eagle Lake Convention Center. The card is sanctioned by the American Fight League.
"We are very excited about this," said Jeremy Zeller, the center's executive director. "We have had some AFL events before but this is the first one since it went national."

Making the league their own
OWENSBORO - Jimmy Dugan was wrong.
No matter what the Tom Hanks character believed, there really is crying in baseball. Anderson County showed it Saturday.
The tears were subdued, but the red eyes were there after the Lady Bearcats advanced deep in the state tournament Friday and Saturday before dropping a heart-breaker to Ryle, the 2006 state champion, in the consolation bracket semi-final.
The game was really softball, baseball's close first cousin, but Dugan was wrong nonetheless.

PRP shows why it's ranked No. 1
LOUISVILLE - Jeremy Turpin has seen a lot of baseball teams but never one like Pleasure Ridge Park.
"They are the best baseball team I have seen in all my years of playing," the Anderson County shortstop-pitcher said after PRP had demolished Turpin and his Anderson County teammates in the best-of-three semi-state series last week in Louisville.
By luck or the fact that they are just so good that no other Sixth Region team had a chance to beat them, the Panthers hosted the first round of the state high school baseball tournament on their home field.
