Anderson track places well at Danville
The Anderson County High School boys' track team finished third in the Danville All-Comers' meet held last Tuesday at Admiral Stadium in Danville. Anderson placed well despite not running some of the Bearcats' top performers in some events as coach Travis Gay elected to give some younger team members the opportunity to compete.
High jumper Jordan Sloan continued to show why he is ranked as one of Kentucky's best with a victory. Sloan cleared the bar at 6-feet. Discus thrower and shot putter John Updike was also impressive, placing second in both events.

Shelby takes lead in district race
SHELBYVILLE - It was everything a match-up of two regional contenders would be expected to be.
Shelby County's Jordan Burk settled down after shaky start to outduel Anderson County's Ryan Pike as the Rockets took a 3-0 victory in a much-anticipated 30th District showdown last Thursday. An overflow crowd saw the region's top two teams, according to the pre-season coaches' poll, battle with every pitch, every swing and every catch counting.

Serious flaws evident in plan to reduce schools' sports schedules
There are times you see or hear something, shake your head in disbelief, then look again.
And you shake your head even more.
In case you missed it, last Thursday, the Kentucky Association of School Superintendents endorsed a "schedule reduction" plan that encourages Kentucky's public schools to not play private schools.
According to several published reports, the plan would only be in force during the regular season. The plan also provides exemptions for existing contracts and "longstanding positive relationships."

Balance powers Lady Bearcats past Bullitt Central netters 3-2
Anderson County put together an impressive showing Thursday night as the Lady Bearcats defeated visiting Bullitt Central 3-2 in girls' tennis action.
Two of Anderson's wins came in straight sets and both losses went the distance before Bullitt Central prevailed.
Anderson's top singles player, Mary Ellen Stratton dropped the first set 6-7 but came back to win the final two sets.

Dixon, Updike roar at Tates Creek meet
The calendar said it had been two years since Travis Gay took his first Anderson County track team to the Tates Creek Invitational.
The results from Saturday's meet in Lexington say it has been light-years.
With Cody Dixon scoring a huge win in the 100-meter dash and John Updike claiming first place in the discus throw, Anderson's boys placed third out of 20 teams, defeating teams like state power Danville and Paul Dunbar.
With most of the Class AAA, Region 5 teams competing in the meet, the only one that finished ahead of the Bearcats was Henry Clay.

Bitter Rivals, Better Buddies
When Shelby County's Haleigh LeCompte stepped into the batter's box for the first time back on March 29, she knew the sounds coming from behind her.
"Tiffany was talking," LeCompte says of Anderson County catcher Tiffany Davenport. "She was trying to get me to talk to her."
If the grins on both faces were any indication, Davenport was successful.
"The umpire said to me, 'I take it you know each other,'" Davenport says. "I told him, 'We are best friends.'"

Lady Cats done in by 'one of those nights'
It would have been easy to blame cold weather, injuries or both for Anderson County's 2-1 loss to visiting Henry Clay Monday night.
It would probably be more correct to just chalk it up to the fickle nature of the softball diamond. Some days, a team just doesn't have it. "It was just one of those nights," Anderson coach Brian Glass said. "We hit the ball hard but right at them."
Indeed. Henry Clay senior Karneisha Johnson gave up just four hits, but got some outstanding defense from those behind her.

Cats, Shelby to tangle for top spot in district
They were ranked as the top two baseball teams in the Eighth Region in pre-season. That they are the best of the 30th District has been a given since Anderson County and Shelby County have both advanced to the regional tournament the last three years and nine of the last 11.
So it is no coincidence that the most anticipated game of the first half of the season comes Thursday night when the Bearcats and Rockets line it up. The first pitch is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Shelby County athletic complex.

No putters, drivers or wedges allowed
Josh Winfrey, Jacob Spaulding and Rob Dillhoff are bringing something new to Lawrenceburg: disc golf.
The trio, all natives of Anderson County, are pioneering what appears to be a growing obsession in the Bluegrass. After connecting with several other avid disc golfers in the area, Winfrey and Spaulding had an active role in founding the University of Kentucky Disc Golf Club, UK's newest intercollegiate club sport,.
Winfrey, the club's vice-president, said that he hoped the group could spread interest in the sport to campus and the surrounding communities.

Mound gem from Pike highlights Florida trip
Anderson County showed why it is considered one of the teams to beat in the Eighth Region with a strong 5-game showing in the Florida Beach Bash, held at Fort Walton Beach.
The Bearcats won three of five, including an impressive 2-0 win over a previously unbeaten Barren County team Thursday.
"Barren has very high expectations for this year and they were a very solid team. It is also my understanding that we beat their ace," said Anderson coach L.W. Barnes. "Barren turned some heads by beating both Lafayette and Lexington Christian their opening day in Florida."
