There is little doubt that Anderson County is seen as the team to beat in the girls' Eighth Region race in 2011. The Lady Bearcats were impressive through the regional tournament and return most of last year's roster.
Everyone else around the region remembers.

If you had any doubt about how wacky the quest for Eighth Region supremacy is expected to be in 2011, just check out a copy of The Cats' Pause Yearbook.
The featured player is sophomore Darryl Hicks, playing for Shelby County last year, who was expected to play for Collins this season, but has transferred to Louisville Trinity, where he's waiting to hit the hardwood next year.

Well, Anderson County, how did you like some real Friday Night Lights?
Just for a few minutes, forget the fact that John Hardin overcame a late deficit to defeat Anderson in the Class 5A, Region 2 championship game Friday night. The hurt, especially for the nine seniors that put on shoulder pads for the final time as Anderson County High School students, will last. There is no denying that. The tears shed in the Bearcats' post-game meeting were profuse.

We only thought Anderson County's football turnaround came about when Blake Curtsinger and Matt Sprague blocked a Bullitt Central extra point, in overtime, back on Oct. 8.
Makes sense, you know. The Bearcats were 3-3, teetering on the brink of .500 or less. Since then, they are riding a six-game win streak, managed to win only the third district title in school history and have rolled to a pair of playoff wins for the first time since Kentucky started determining state football champions with a tournament in 1959.
