No better comparison between the past and the future of Anderson County basketball could be found than in the pages of The Anderson News I found myself thumbing through over Thanksgiving weekend.

In this week's edition of The Anderson News, I briefly relived to of the greatest wins in Western High School history, namely when the Eagles eliminated Anderson County from the 30th District tournaments in 1982 and 1983. Biggest wins in Eagle history? Perhaps. But there is no question they are the most memorable to any Eagle fan today.
So what are the biggest wins in Western history? Records are very spotty and I have been unable to locate everything but these have to be among the biggest.
1.Western 72, Anderson County 59 (1982)

It has been over 55 years.
But even today, visitors to the Discount Sport Shop in Harrodsburg are reminded that even though Bruce Springate played major college basketball at Eastern Kentucky and roots for the Louisville Cardinals, he's still a Western Eagle.

When a fan looked at a Western High basketball roster over the years, he only needed to look at the numbers and first names for changes. The last names were often the same.

If Western High School really was “one big family,” one of the reasons was that the Eagle Nation was made up of numerous families like the Rogers boys, who starred for the Eagles from the late 1960s and through the 70s.
All were major contributors on some of the strongest teams in Eagle history.

As a sports-minded teen growing up in Somerset in the 1960s, I was well aware of Anderson County athletics.
But it never occurred to me this community would become my home. Also, I certainly never dreamed the day would come when I would have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the local sports scene.
In 1971, while serving as news editor of the daily paper in Somerset, I was invited by my boss to accompany him to the Sweet Sixteen.

There are times when it really hits home just how long I have been covering Anderson County sports. We know that basketball has been played in Anderson County for 100 seasons now and, for the most part, I have been writing about the sport for a little over 25 years.
A quarter of Anderson County's hoops history? That is kind of mind-boggling when you think about it. And I can honestly say there have been few times more enjoyable than those when I had the privilege of writing about Western Eagle basketball from 1986-89.

Basketball fans often talk about the “What ifs?” in their sport.
Like “What if Mike Casey had not broken his leg in the summer before his senior year? Would a team of Dan Issel, Mike Pratt and Mike Casey have been unstoppable in 1970?”
Or “What if Terry Howard had remained perfect at the free throw line? Would Kentucky and Louisville have played for the national championship in 1975?”

The only thing certain about picking the best ever in Anderson County basketball history is that we did not make room for enough players on the teams. Twenty boys players over 100 years? Ten girls since 1975?
It is practically impossible to do so, especially the way basketball has changed over time.
