Some use old granddad’s secret recipe. Others simply toss whatever edible items they have into the pot and let them stew.
There’s no shortage of ways to make burgoo, but come Saturday, Oct. 1, one version will be proclaimed the best.
The Anderson News, in cooperation with the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce, city of Lawrenceburg and Anderson County Tourism Authority, will sponsor its inaugural Burgoo Cook-off from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., tentatively on the Lawrenceburg Green.
The event coincides with the annual Burgoo Festival, scheduled for Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 in downtown Lawrenceburg.
Judging will be conducted by those who make a $2 donation to Shop With A Cop before sampling a variety of burgoo.
All proceeds from the event will go to Shop With A Cop, an annual program that provides Christmas gifts to area children.
Along with judging the burgoo, participants will also judge each team’s booth presentation, which will count for half of the total score. Teams are encouraged to have fun and be creative.
Entering a cook-off team is easy and free.
To register, e-mail the name of your team and contact information to news@theandersonnews.com.
But hurry, only 15 teams will be allowed to enter, and several have already registered.
Booth space will be provided at no charge, and teams will be allowed to set up starting at 7 a.m.
Judging will end at 3 p.m., followed by a trophy presentation to the winning team.
Teams are asked to remove their booths and clean up their areas immediately following the trophy presentation.
Burgoo samples will be distributed in 2 ounce cups, and teams should prepare at least several gallons.
No ground fires or burgoo sales will be allowed.
