Late free throws lift Cats past Shelby

The Bearcats outlasted a determined Shelby County team 55-49 in a pressure-packed boys final. Anderson virtually the entire game but could never shake the Rockets, who had won seven straight. The Bearcats led 46-34 with six minutes to play but got away from their game plan, according to Coach Glen Drury. Shelby rallied behind the heroic play of junior guard Norris Beckley, Jr., cutting the lead to one on two separate occasions.

Will Ruggles, who left the game briefly with a deep cut over his left eye, hit two crucial free throws with 19.5 seconds to play, then C.J. Penny clinched things with a free throw at 4.9 seconds.

C.J. Penny led all scorers with 23 points, while Landon Jenkins came through with 14. Jacob Russell scored 12 and pulled down 15 rebounds.

Beckley led Shelby with 12 points.

Anderson has now won 12 of its last 13 games and heads to the Eighth Region tournament, beginning Wednesday, March 4 at Henry County High School. Pairings will be set in the regional draw Sunday. Pairings will be posted at www.theandersonnews.com as soon as they are announced.

Lady Bearcats roll past Spencer

For the first time since 1978, the Anderson County Lady Bearcats are district champions. Anderson staggered Spencer County early, then turned back a Bear rally for a 66-51 victory in the 30th District tournament championship game Friday night at Anderson County High School.

The Lady Bearcats never trailed, but after leading by as many as 16 points in the first half, saw their lead whittled to eight by halftime.

Spencer was never closer.

Lindsay Fultz led Anderson with 22 points while Kenisha Marshall scored 18 for Spencer.  Marshall scored only five points in the second half.

The Lady Bearcats will now play in the Eighth Region Tournament Monday or Tuesday night at South Oldham High School against an opponent yet to be determined. Pairings will be set in the regional draw Saturday and will be posted at www.theandersonnews.com as soon as they are announced.
