The fifth annual DARE Fishing Derby will be this Saturday, June 7, from 8-11 a.m. at the Hope Community Church Lake near the Anderson/Franklin county line on U.S. 127.
The derby is sponsored by the Anderson County Sheriff's Office DARE Program and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Children ages 15 and younger are invited to fish for free. Participants are asked to bring their own fishing pole/tackle. Bait will be provided, and participants can keep what they catch. The Sheriff's Office stocks the pond a few days before the event.
Prizes and trophies will be given in two categories - ages 10-15 and younger than 10. There will also be door prizes, giveaways and a free lunch.
This is the second year the derby will be at the church lake. Previously, the event was at the county park, but it outgrew that location, said Sheriff Troy Young.
Last year's event drew about 160 participants. Counting parents and friends, the total crowd was around 350.
