Both Anderson County High School basketball teams recorded victories in holiday tournament play Tuesday night.
The Bearcats jumped to a quick 7-0 lead and never trailed in defeating Lexington Sayre, 57-48, in the Sayre Holiday Classic. The Bearcats led by as many as 17 points in the third quarter but needed to hit 10 straight free throws in the final three minutes to hold off a furious Sayre rally.
The Spartans cut Anderson’s lead to four and had a chance to get closer, but the Bearcats hung on.
Darrin Laswell, who swished five 3-pointers, led Anderson with 19 points in just under 20 minutes of play. Laswell turned his ankle in the third quarter and his status for Wednesday’s game with Somerset is unknown. That game tips off at Sayre at 6 p.m.
Logan Woodside added 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Bearcats. Mike Smith paced Sayre with 18 points.
Meanwhile, the Lady Bearcats scored their second rout in as many days when they rolled past Maysville St. Patrick, 67-38 in the quarter-finals of the Mercer County Titan Christmas Clash. Mackenzie Cann swished eight 3-pointers, a school record, to pace Anderson.
Monday, the Lady Bearcats rolled over Monticello, 69-44. Anderson led 42-13 at the half.
The Lady Bearcats will take on perennial power Elizabethtown in the semifinals. The teams met before Christmas in the second round of the Republic Bank Classic at Lexington Catholic. Elizabethtown won that one 58-47. Game time is 7 p.m.
