C.J. Penny scored 27 points while Jacob Russell added 18 to lead Anderson County to a 65-50 win over visiting Garrard County in the boys' high school basketball opener Monday night.

Penny canned 11 of 17 shots before a crowd that included several college coaches. The Mr. Basketball candidate also pulled down 13 rebounds and dished out four assists.

“It was hard to believe he did all of the things he did,” said Anderson coach Glen Drury. “C.J. had kind of a quiet game.”

Drury also lauded Penny's defense, saying it was a key factor in the game.

Russell also pulled down 13 boards and handed out four assists despite playing football until 10 days before the game.

“Coach said this was a good win for us,” said junior guard Will Ruggles, who scored 11 points, including a key 3-pointer that silenced Garrard's final push early in the fourth quarter.

Anderson returns to action Tuesday, Dec. 2 at Casey County and will travel to Gallatin County on Monday, Dec. 8 in a big early-season matchup of Eighth Region contenders.
