The state’s transportation cabinet lowered the speed limit on U.S. 127 Bypass to 45 mph in front of the new elementary school, and drivers are just now finding out.
Over the past week, multiple drivers have been pulled over, thinking that the limit jumped to 55 mph when they passed the park entrance heading north, and dropped at the same location when heading south.
The move now means 45 mph is the law from about 500 feet north of Emma B. Ward Elementary to Carlton Drive, a stretch of just over two miles. That stretch includes four traffic lights — five if the one at Eagle Lake is included — on the section of highway built to whisk drivers through Lawrenceburg with minimal delay.
Sheriff Troy Young said the state approved the change Sept. 18, which became effective once new signs were erected. When that occurred is anyone’s guess because no official notice was sent out.
Young said his officers have been told to use “good common sense and to try to educate drivers about the new limit.”
“We’re just saying slow down,” he said.
