Jay Smith, Austin Cummins and Christian Estes scored 16 points each as Anderson County defeated Carroll County 63-54 in boys' basketball action Thursday night in Carrollton.
The Bearcats led all four quarter stops but were unable to pull away until the final eight minutes when they outscored the Panthers 24-19. Cummins and Estes both scored eight points in the final frame.
“Carroll County has a nice ball club,” Anderson coach Glen Drury said. “They have an all-region player in Trey Boles and a nice guard (Jay Damron).”
Boles led all scorers with 19 points while Damron scored 18.
“Carroll played really good compared to when I had seen them,” Drury said. “We did a good job matching their intensity. I want to give them a lot of credit. They were without one of their better players.”
Center Dallas Gibson (6-5), who had been counted on to provide an inside presence for the Panthers, did not suit up.
Anderson improved to 12-1 while Carroll, a team that some feel has a chance to win the Eighth Region All-A championship, fell to 9-7.
