Anderson County survived a scare, but pulled out a 71-69 win at Rockcastle County in boys' basketball action Friday night.
The Bearcats led at every quarter stop but had to rally late after the Rockets took a fourth quarter lead.
“They overtook us with three minutes to play,” Anderson assistant coach Bryan Hyatt said. “Our guys responded with some hustle plays and that got us back in the lead. We showed a will to win when we could have folded.”
The Bearcats jumped out to a 23-15 lead after a quarter but Rockcastle gradually chipped away. “The first half, they played a zone and that led to us shooting 16 three-pointers and we hit six,” Hyatt said. “We also created some turnovers that led to some easy baskets.'
Hyatt said Rockcastle started cutting the lead when the Rockets began matching the Anderson shooters out of the zone. “They also took care of the ball better and that limited our points off turnovers,” he said. “On the other hand, we turned it over 12 times in the second half.
“Rockcastle has a good offensive team and we never could get consecutive defensive stops,” Hyatt said.
Jay Smith led Anderson with 20 points while Austin Cummins had 19 and Luke Mann scored 12.
