Anderson County Board of Education meets today

The Anderson County Board of Education will hold a special called meeting Wed., May 28, at 7 p.m. at the central office located at 1160 Bypass North, Lawrenceburg KY 40342.

Anderson County High School graduation is June 5

Anderson County High School graduation will be held Thurs., June 5, at 6:30 p.m. at the Civic Convention Center located at 405 Metro St., Frankfort KY 40601.

Anderson County Board of Education meets June 9

The Anderson County Board of Education will hold their regular monthly meeting Mon., June 9, at 7 p.m. at the central office located at 1160 Bypass North, Lawrenceburg KY 40342.

Anderson County Adult Learning Center will host GED graduation

The Anderson County Adult Education GED Graduation will be held Mon., June 9, at 7 p.m. in Anderson County High School’s Bearcat Theater located at 750 W. Broadway St., Lawrenceburg KY 40342.

This ceremony will honor students who have received their GED diplomas during the current school year.

All graduates participating in the graduation are asked to call the office at the Adult Learning Center at 502.839.3754 to confirm a reservation for a cap and gown, tassel and pictures. Graduates will meet at the theater stage area at 6 p.m.

The staff has nominated several individuals for the National Adult Education Honor Society, sponsored by Beta Sigma Phi, and they will be recognized at the ceremony. Several of the graduates will speak of their experiences with the adult education program and their expectations for the future.

The graduates, family and friends and the public are invited to attend a reception sponsored by the Retired Teachers of Anderson County. The reception will be held in the theater foyer following the graduation ceremony.

Second Brigade Motorcycle Club hosts memorial run

The Second Brigade Motorcycle Club is hosting its 5th Annual Memorial Run Sat., June 7.

The Run will begin at S&B Cycles, 865 N. Main St. Lawrenceburg KY 40342.

Signups begin at 10 a.m. with kickstands up at noon. All proceeds will go to Thompson-Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore.

The Second Brigade Motorcycle Club is a not-for-profit organization with the sole purpose of raising money and awareness for veterans and veteran issues.

•June 10, 17, 24  - Stand Up to Falling – A Fall Prevention Program for Older Adults and their family. 9 a.m.– 10:30 a.m. This event is free. Participants will learn how to prevent falls which lead to injuries and hospitalization.

•June 25 – Mending Basics, 5:30 p.m. –6:30 p.m. Participants will learn how to sew on buttons, fix ripped seams and repair hems. This is event is for adults and youth ages 12 years old and older. Bring a mending and learn how to fix it. This event is free.

•June 9 (1:30-3:30 p.m.) or June 12 (9-11 a.m.) or June 16 (6-8 p.m.) Food Preservation Basics. The cost is $8, which includes a “Ball Blue Book – Guide to Food Preservation” and other publications.  One of these classes must be chosen before the hands-on food preservation workshops.

•June 17 – 6–8 p.m. This is a hands-on workshop on canning meat and vegetables. The cost is $10.

•June 24 – 6-8 p.m. This is a hands-on workshop on making jam and jelly.  The cost is $5.

•July 8 – 6-8 p.m. This is a hands-on workshop on making pickles. The cost is $5.

•July 22 – 6–8 p.m. This is a hands-on workshop on canning fruit, freezing and dehydrating. The cost for this class is $5.

Annual Chamber golf scramble is May 31

The Anderson County Chamber of Commerce Golf Scramble will take place at Wild Turkey Trace Golf Course May 31 starting with breakfast at 8 a.m.

A brand new car, plus several other hole-in-one opportunities, at stake, this year.

State Fair Pride of the Counties Committee

The Pride of the Counties committee will meet regularly before the Kentucky State Fair to make plans for the Anderson County exhibit.

Fire Department will assist in benefit at Edwardo’s

There will be a benefit Thurs., May 29, at Edwardo’s Pizza and Subs located at 1090 Glensboro Rd., Lawrenceburg KY 40342, from 6-8 p.m.

Anderson County firefighters will be servers. The tips and a portion of the profit go to the Crusade for Children, an organization that helps children with special needs.

ACHS greenhouse sales are scheduled

The annual Anderson County High School FFA greenhouse will take place every Saturday through May 31. Sale hours are 1-4 p.m.

This is a student-run greenhouse with all the proceeds going to benefit ACHS FFA.

ACALC will host hip-hop dance for children

The Anderson County Adult Learning Center will host a hip-hop dance for children, ages 7-18 Thurs. May 29, Tues., June 3 and Thurs., June 12 from 6-7 p.m.

This class is an introduction to the hip-hop style of dance. Many different styles and techniques will be demonstrated and taught for the specified age groups.

Participants need to wear tennis shoes and long, flexible pants.

ACALC will host dog obedience class

The Anderson County Adult Learning Center will host a basic dog obedience class at the Anderson County Park 6-7 p.m. on Mondays through June 23.

This is a six-week session where owners will learn to teach their dog to sit, lie down, stay, heel, come, and do tricks.

Any dog at least 4 months old is welcome. The first night of class is for dog owners only but for the remainder of the class, owners can bring family, a dog, leash, and some favorite treats.

“Stop by get started” is for new BCTC students

Bluegrass Community and Technical College will host a “Stop by get started” event for new students Mon., June 9, from noon- 5 p.m.

The event will allow 2014 fall students to fill out an application, conduct a COMPASS exam, apply for financial aid, meet with an advisor, enroll in classes and attend a new student orientation.

The BCTC Lawrenceburg Campus is located at 1500 Bypass North, Lawrenceburg KY 40342.

KSP will be conducting safety checkpoints

The Kentucky State Police Post 12, which provides police coverage for Anderson, Fayette, Franklin, Scott, Shelby, Spencer and Woodford counties, will be conducting periodic traffic safety checkpoints at locations approved by the Kentucky State Police Policy and Procedures Manual.

There will also be special traffic enforcement in high collision areas using radar, laser and saturation patrols.

These checkpoints will be conducted in an effort to enforce the traffic laws of Kentucky.

Special attention will be paid to occupant protection (seat belt adherence), sobriety, insurance, and registration violations.

Severe weather warning testing days have changed

Anderson County 911 changed its weekly testing of the outdoor severe weather warning sirens from noon on Saturdays to noon on Wednesdays.

Anderson County Community Medical Clinic

Anderson County Community Medical Clinic Inc. will be open the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Patients must be screened and referred to the clinic through the Anderson County Health Department. To qualify, one must be an Anderson County Kentucky resident, 18 years of age or older, have been diagnosed with a chronic illness and have no insurance.

Call the Health Department at 502.839.4551 to be screened and given an appointment. No walk-ins will be accepted at the clinic.

Relay for Life Poker Run and motorcycle ride

There will be a poker run and motorcycle ride benefiting Relay for Life, hosted by Walmart Sat., June 7, at American Legion Post 34 located at 725 West Broadway, Lawrenceburg KY 40342.

The registration for the motorcycle ride will be 10:30 a.m.–noon with a kick stand up at 12:30 p.m. The first 25 riders get a free T-shirt.

Food and drink are provided. Other events are the poker run, best hand, worst hand and 50/50 door prizes.
