Compassionate Friends announce upcoming meetings
The Compassionate Friends will host meetings for bereavement parents who have lost children of any age.
Meetings are held on the first Thursday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and the third Monday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the hospice building, 643 Teton Trail in Frankfort.

Helping Hands — Heart of Community to hold fundraiser
The Helping Hands — Heart of Community will be hosting a Thirty-One company charity party on April 27 from 2-4 p.m. at the Anderson County Senior Citizens Center.
Proceeds will go to Sand Spring Baptist Church Mission Team.

Woodford County Woman’s Club spring garden tour and plant sale to be held
The 2013 Fourth Annual Woodford County Woman’s Club Spring Garden Tour and Plant Sale will be held May 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  According to the press release, this spring’s theme is “ Woodford County Backyards” and will feature seven intimate gardens in Versailles, Midway and the surrounding area, a community vegetable garden and a plant sale at The Little House.
Before, during or after the garden tour on May 11 stop by The Little House at 247 Lexington Street and visit the Garden Plant Sale sponsored by the Woodford County Woman’s Club Garden Department. The Club will have a variety of labeled and potted plants.

Tickets the day of the tour will also be available for $20 at the following address: The Little House, 247 Lexington St., Versailles.
Proceeds from the tour will be used to purchase coats and shoes for Woodford County children and to support other Woodford County charities.

The Anderson County Library will offer the following free classes in April.
All classes are subject to cancellation, and class space is limited to five students. Students will use the library’s laptops.

Veterans can apply for VA claims at Legion
Veterans can file for VA claims, ask information on veteran benefits, initiate claim appeals or just have an opportunity to ask how to negotiate the VA system, according to a press release from the American Legion.
When: Fourth Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m.
Where: American Legion, Post 34, at Legion Park in Lawrenceburg.

Woodford County Historical Society to host fundraiser benefit show
Country music singer John Conlee will perform two shows at the Woodford Theatre in Versailles on Saturday, May 11 at part of a fundraiser for the Woodford County Historical Society. One show will be at 4 p.m. and another at 8 p.m.
The tickets are $25 each and all of the money goes to the historical  
society, according to event organizers.

The Adult Learning Center, located at 219 E. Woodford St., is open from 8 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Adult education offers classes in GED/College-prep instruction, educational assessment and learning workplace skills. The Bluegrass Community and Technical College offers adult education services Monday through Friday from noon until 4 p.m. Community education offers lifelong learning classes, humanities programs, Community of Promise involvement and opportunities to volunteer in the schools and throughout the community.  For information call the office at 502-839-3754.

Healthy Eating for Successful Living
The Anderson Senior Center and Woodford Senior Center are sponsoring a Healthy Eating for Successful Living class starting April 9 from 9 a.m. to noon.
The class runs for five Tuesdays and helps participants maintain or improve their health by learning to eat a variety of nutritious foods and how to maintain a health weight, according to the press release.
Sessions will include reading and discussion, brainstorming, exercise and setting weekly and long-term goals. In-store instruction on reading labels is included, along with a restaurant outing to practice picking healthy meals.
The sessions are free and will be held at the Woodford Senior Center. Bus transportation will be offered by the Anderson Senior Center to and from each session.

Driver safety course
The Anderson Senior Center, 160 Township Square, is offering a driver safety course May 16 from 12:30-5 p.m.
The class will be taught by Don Hamrick.
“Cars have changed, so have traffic rules, driving conditions and the roads we travel every day,” event organizers said. “Even the most experienced drivers can benefit from brushing up their driving skills.”
Participants may be eligible to receive an insurance discount upon completing the course, and should consult their agent for details. Although the course is geared to those age 60 and older, the course is open to all ages.
Cost is $12 for AARP members; $14 for non-members.
There are no tests to pass.
