Anderson County has suspended its recycling program after the truck used to collect items was destroyed in a traffic accident Wednesday afternoon, Judge-Executive Steve Cornish’s office announced.

The truck was attempting to take a left off Highway 62 onto Primrose Lane near the golf course when another vehicle attempted to pass and slammed into the side of the truck.

There were reportedly five people in the vehicle that struck the truck. Preliminary reports indicate that several of passengers were injured, some seriously. No other information on their condition was available Thursday afternoon.

The driver of the recycling truck received only minor injuries.

The truck was the only recycling vehicle owned by the county. Cornish said the truck was a surplus vehicle when the county purchased it, and that it would have only minimal value on an insurance claim.
