Fathers need to draw strength from God to lead their family

-A A +A
By Brian Owens

As we approach Father’s Day I want to issue a challenge to the dads in our community. We need to wake up and stand up in defense of our families!

If you have not recognized that our families are under attack, you are out of touch with reality.

While your individual family unit may be faring well, the institution of the family, as God ordained it, is under distress.

Our wives and children need godly leaders in their homes. They need men who are abiding in Christ, men who will model the loving servant-leadership of King Jesus. How do we do this? Let me offer a few suggestions.

First, we need to stay in the Scriptures. 2 Timothy 3:15 says that the Scriptures are able to make us wise unto salvation.

We need to continually return to Scripture as the benchmark of God’s will for the home.

Second, we need to stay on our knees. According to church tradition, James the brother of Jesus was known as “camel knees” due to the unusual amounts of time he spent on his knees in prayer.

We must daily bathe our families in prayer.

Third, we need to love Jesus. 1 Peter 2:7 says “unto you therefore who believe, He is precious…”

This should go without saying but Christ should take the preeminence before everything in our life.

He should be the only one who should come before family. A strong home begins with a man who loves Jesus more than his family. Then, and only then, can you love your family like they need you to.

Lastly, we need to be broken. Pride has caused the fall of many a man (Proverbs 29:23). A man’s pride shall bring him low. Brokenness keeps us aware of the fact that we are sinners in need of daily grace.

Our humility before God and our family will show Christ as being precious in a way that a man who lords his beliefs over them with a heavy hand could ever do.

Our families are our primary field of ministry, and what our families need most of all are men of God who are in love with King Jesus. Our children need dads who are men of the Word.

Our wives need husbands who are men of prayer. Men, we must be broken before God in order to be filled with His Spirit and usable in His kingdom.

Be careful to remain close to Christ and remain close to your family. Much is at stake!
