Students in Mrs. Heil’s fourth grade reading class at Emma B. Ward Elementary showed an interest in learning about modern-slavery during a class discussion in which they learned that 27 million people in the world today are enslaved, according to a news release from Mrs. Heil. The decision to study the topic was student-initiated.
To begin this unit, students read biographies and an informational article on the topic of modern-day slavery. Students also watched Internet videos from CNN’s Freedom Project website as well as from the END IT movement’s website.
The following essays were selected by a panel of judges on the basis of idea-development, sentence structure and accuracy of information.
