Anderson County suffered its first loss of the season but bounced back to take a consolation game in girls' basketball action at the Republic Bank Classic, held at Lexington Catholic High School.
Top-ranked Marion County defeated Bowling Green in the championship game on Sunday.
Anderson came out on the short end of the score for the first time this year when Bryan Station upset the Lady Bearcats, 43-41, in the tournament quarterfinal on Saturday.
"Our defense was still good early," said Anderson coach Tony Kays. "Unfortunately, we gave up boards that we usually get."
Anderson's Mackenzie Cann literally kept the Lady Bearcats in the game, scoring a career-best 34 points. Only two other Anderson players found the basket. "It was a poor shooting day other than Makenzie," Kays said.
Bryan Station, a team that has been up-and-down all season, lost to Marion County in the tournament semifinals, but whipped Franklin County in the third place game to go 8-6 on the year.
In Sunday's consolation round, the Lady Bearcats took control early and rolled past Lexington Catholic for the second time this year, 56-40. Anderson had beaten the Lady Knights, 59-36, on Nov. 30.
Eriel McKee led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points while Corrin Robinson added 12. Cann scored 11.
"The kids were upset but came back and played well on Sunday," Kays said. "We will be fine. Those things happen."
Kays said the Lady Bearcats put together a much more complete game against the tournament hosts. "We had a better inside game and shot well from the perimeter," he said. "Rebounding is a big key for our team. We will refocus once we get back to the practice floor."
Catholic went into the Christmas holiday at 4-6.
Anderson, now 9-1 on the year, returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 27 in the Capital City Showdown at Franklin County. The Lady Bearcats take on Bishop Brossart at 12:30 p.m., then return to the hardwood later that afternoon against Bethlehem at 5:15 p.m.
Lady Bearcats defeat LaRue in tourney opener
Makenzie Cann scored 23 points while Alex Avritt added 15 and Eriel McKee 14 as Anderson County slipped past LaRue County, 64-53, in the Lady Bearcats' opener of the Republic Bank Classic at Lexington Catholic High School Friday afternoon.
McKee also pulled down nine rebounds and had six steals while Cann hauled in eight boards as the Lady Bearcats remained unbeaten in eight games. LaRue fell to 6-2.
Anderson will play Bryan Station, which pulled a mild 52-49 upset of Assumption, in the tournament quarterfinals at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Anderson outlasted Bryan Station, 56-52, in a game played at Anderson last year.
