Lady Bearcats take third in Mercer tourney

By John Herndon

Harlan County scored on a layup with 4.5 seconds to play in overtime to defeat Anderson County 61-60 in the Sayre Spartan Holiday Classic Thursday night in Lexington.

Anderson had one final chance when Erik Newton drove the length of the court then passed to Seth Carmichael on a wing but Harlan County blocked the shot.

Harlan won the round-robin affair with Anderson finishing second. Somerset upset Sayre for third place in the tourney.

Anderson had gotten off to a good start, leading 19-16 after a quarter, but the Bearcats went cold in the second and third quarters, scoring just six points in each frame as Harlan County built a lead that reached as large as 15 points.  Anderson, however, rallied with a frantic press and actually took the lead late in the contest, but it took some clutch free throwing by the Black Bears, coupled with Anderson missing three free throws that could have sealed things in the overtime.

Logan Woodside led Anderson with 15 points and Newton added 14. Chad Massingill led Harlan County, now 10-3, with 17 points.

Anderson fell to 5-5 and is off until the Bearcats play Collins on Friday, Jan. 7.

At Harrodsburg, Anderson County defeated host Mercer County 52-46 to take third place in the Lady Titan Christmas Clash Thursday night. No other details were available to The Anderson News Thursday night.

The Lady Bearcats return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 4 when they play at Henry Clay.
