The Anderson County girls' basketball team will play Oldham County in the first round of the Eighth Region Tuesday night, March 2. Anderson and Oldham will close out the first round, playing in the second game of Tuesday night's session. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
The tournament is being held at Simon Kenton High School.
The Lady Bearcats and Oldham were scheduled to have played at Anderson on Jan. 8, but weather forced a cancellation. A makeup date was set for Feb. 10, but was also canceled because of weather. the teams will now play with the winner moving on and the loser going home for the season.
Oldham is 13-14 under first-year coach Stephen Mullins, but has lost five of its last six, including the 29th District championship game, 77-58, to South Oldham.
The Colonels like to push the ball and play a fast pace and average nearly 63 points a game. However, opponents are scoring at that same clip.
Forward Emily Lape leads the Colonels in scoring and could give Anderson some problems around the basket.
Anderson, 17-8, will be a solid favorite, but cannot look ahead to a possible semi-final showdown with Walton-Verona, a team that might have the best player in the region. Walton-Verona, which defeated Simon Kenton for the 32nd District crown, will play 31st District runner-up Carroll County in Tuesday's first game.
Pairings for the tournament are:
Monday, March 1: South Oldham (19-7, 29th District winner) vs. Shelby County (13-15, 30th runnerup), 6 p.m.; Owen County (17-9, 31st winner) vs. Simon Kenton (19-8, 32nd runnerup), 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday, March 2: Walton-Verona (24-4, 32nd winner) vs. Carroll County (14-13, 31st runnerup), 6 p.m.; Anderson County (17-8, 30th winner) vs. Oldham County (13-14, 29th runnerup), 7:30 p.m.
Friday, March 5: Semifinals
Saturday, March 6: Finals.
Times will be posted as they become available to The Anderson News.
