Lady Bearcats roll past Collins
The Anderson County High School girls' basketball team rolled to its fifth consecutive 30th District championship with a 47-34 win over host Collins Friday night.
The Lady Bearcats roared to a 27-7 lead midway through the second quarter, then survived deep foul trouble and a cold shooting night to post the victory, the Lady Bearcats' 21st straight win. Destiny Stewart swished a trio of 3-point shots to energize the Lady Bearcats early.
Collins drew within 36-27 with 6:04 to play, but Anderson's Eriel McKee and Makenzie Cann repeatedly made the big plays down the stretch to give the Lady Bearcats the victory.
McKee scored seven of her team-high 19 points in the final six minutes with two of the baskets coming off passes from Cann. Alex Avritt sank a key jumper in the homestretch as well.
Anderson is now 29-1 on the season, heading into the Eighth Region Tournament, which opens on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at North Oldham High School.
Stewart, Cann, McKee and Whiteside were Anderson's representatives on the all-tournament team.
Collins boys defeat Bearcats
Collins won its second consecutive district title with a 63-51 win over Anderson County in the boys' final.
The Titans went on a 13-2 run in the second quarter to turn a 20-11 deficit into a 24-22 lead.
Collins took advantage of Anderson having to play without guard Jay Smith for a crucial three minutes during the first half run. Smith began to suffer nose bleed with Anderson in front 22-17. By the time he returned, Collins had taken the lead.
The Titans extended their lead to 36-26 in the first 2:05 of the third quarter, utilizing a significant size advantage to pound the offensive boards.
Anderson never got closer than 8 points the rest of the way as Collins won its 10th straight game.
Smith led Anderson with 18 points while Luke Mann came off the bench to score 12. Dez Marshall, the Eighth Region's Player of the Year, led Collins with 13 points while Brent Kidwell scored 12.
Anderson fell to 21-4 on the year while Collins improved to 21-6. Both teams advance to the regional tournament, beginning Monday night at Henry County High School.
Smith, Christian Estes and Austin Cummins were Anderson's picks on the all-tournament team.
