SHELBYVILLE -- Anderson County left little doubt about its mental preparation as the Lady Bearcats routed Eminence 68-12 in the 30th District opener Tuesday night at Shelby County High School.
The Lady Bearcats raced to a 21-0 lead before Eminence scored and kept extending the lead throughout the game even though Anderson coach Tony Kays substituted liberally. The Anderson starters headed to the bench for good midway through the third quarter, but the reserves held Eminence scoreless in the fourth frame.
Kays acknowledged that a total obliteration such as Tuesday's game can present special problems -- "You can get in some bad habits," he said -- but that his team was focused.
"I thought we came out and did a lot of things well for the most part. We passed the ball well and distributed the ball," Kays said." We shot the ball well."
Anderson hit 44 percent of its shots from two point range and took advantage of 39 Eminence turnovers. Anderson was charged with 14 miscues. The Lady Bearcats improved to 16-8 while Eminence closed out at 2-27,
All 11 Anderson players saw extensive action and scored. Senior Kara Yeaste led Anderson with 17 points while eighth-grader Mackenzie Cann scored 15.
"I thought Kara played real well," Kays said. "She hit the floor once and I complimented her on that. "You get in a game like this and it is easy to go for steals and get out of defensive position. I thought that for the most part we played pretty smart."
Anderson now moves on to play the winner of Shelby County and Spencer County in the district championship game Friday night, Feb. 26. The Lady Bearcats will be going for a second consecutive district crown. Shelby and Spencer play in the other first round game Wednesday at 6 p.m., just before the Anderson boys play Spencer.
Kays likes having the extra day to prepare. "I think so," he said when asked if it was an advantage. "So much of it at this time of the year is about preparation. I like having the extra day."
Regional tourney starts Monday
Anderson also advanced to the Eighth Region tournament by virtue of its win over Eminence. The regional tournament will be held beginning Monday, March 1 at Simon Kenton High School. The draw for the regional tournament will be held Saturday, Feb. 27 at Simon Kenton. A complete tournament bracket will be posted at www.theandersonnews.com as soon as it becomes available.
