The match-up between 11th-ranked Anderson County and no. 19 Shelby County proved to be everything it was supposed to be.

And more.

Two innings more, to be exact.

Anderson's Caitlyn Royalty raced home on Miranda Drury's ground out in the top of the ninth inning for the game's only run and the championship of the 30th District Tournament Tuesday night at Spencer County High School.

It was Anderson's first district crown since winning back-to-back titles in 2002 and 2003.

Royalty led off the ninth with a single, then moved to second on an error. After a failed sacrifice attempt, Royalty stole third base.

Drury then hit a grounder to short. The only play was at first, giving Anderson the lead.

Anderson pitcher Courtney Turpin was outstanding, scattering 6 hits and at one time retiring 13 straight Shelby batters. She was at her best in the two extra frames though, stranding two runners in scoring position.

Turpin ended the game with a double play, snaring a line drive, then throwing to first to double up Shelby runner Bailey Shaw.

The Eighth Region Tournament will be played at Oldham County High School, beginning Monday. The regional draw is Sunday. Check back at www.theandersonnews.com for regional tournament information.
