The summer temperatures are rising and so is Lawrenceburg’s rating as a safe city.

Hot on the heals of a SafeWise.com ranking as the ninth safest city in Kentucky, the Movoto Real Estate Blog has declared Lawrenceburg as the safest.

According to blog writer Natalie Grigson, Movoto created its rankings by generating a list from the U.S. Census data of all of the places in the state with populations of 10,000 or more. Data from the FBI’s 2012 Uniform Crime Report (the latest full-year edition) was used to narrow the list to 35. City’s that did not report crime data were eliminated.

The blog took into consideration the number of murders, rapes, robberies, assaults, burglaries, thefts and vehicle thefts. What set Lawrenceburg apart was its extremely low ranking for property crime.

All the cities in the Top 10 had no reported murders in 2012.

Crime rates for each city were based on crimes per 100,000 residents to fairly compare cities with both larger and smaller populations. The blog ranked each from 1-35 in terms of murders, violent crimes, property crimes, and total number of crimes per 100,000 people, with one being the safest place, which, in this case, was Lawrenceburg.

Violent crimes and property crimes each accounted for 30 percent of the overall score and total crimes made up 10 percent. Weighted rankings were averaged into an overall Big Deal Score with the lower the score, the safer the city.

According to the blog, in one year, Lawrenceburg had a reported 902 property crimes per 100,000 people, including 601 thefts, 244 burglaries and 56 vehicle thefts per 100,000 people. There were also 28 assaults and nine robberies, making 38 violent crimes, and just 940 crimes per 100,000 for the entire year.

Lawrenceburg residents also had the lowest chance of being the victim of a crime with odds of 1 in 106.

Nearby Lexington was ranked 27th putting it in the bottom 10. The blog found Lexington residents have a 1 in 21 chance of being a victim of crime.

Nearby Frankfort ranked 29th, Louisville 33rd, Winchester 34th and Newport, where residents have a 1 in 11 chance of being a victim of crime making it the least safe among cities with over 10,000 residents, was 35th.
