American Legion Post 34 and Auxiliary hosted the 8th District meeting March 20, the post announced in a news release.
The 8th District is one of 11 in Kentucky and includes Perryville, Danville, Stanford, Nicholasville, Harrodsburg, Richmond, Berea, Shelbyville, Lancaster, Liberty and Lawrenceburg.
Unit members spoke of their support for our veterans and communities. One unit had a request from soldiers wanting peanut butter. Soldiers keep peanut butter in their vehicles in case they are not able to return to their unit. The auxiliary unit sent a box of peanut better as well as other items.
Nettie Halvorson of Unit 34 spoke about the Healing Field and the need to get the information out about the Healing Field and to get articles in the local newspaper.
She also spoke of the financial need for other units to help with flags, poles and markers. She also told members this is a Department of Kentucky Healing Field for all Kentucky soldiers lost in the war on terrorism.
Second Vice President Joyce Bastin conducted the meeting and told members about the homeless veterans Transitional Treatment Program at Leestown VA facility. Veterans may stay two years but have to supply their own toiletry items. Auxiliary unit members are asked to bring shampoo, shaving cream, playing cards, puzzles and snacks to the spring conference in April for these veterans.
Following the meeting, a delicious meal was served to all provided by Post 34 Legion and Auxiliary.
