LETTER: County remains out of industrial loop

To the editor:

Anderson County has been out of the industrial loop a long time, so the criticism of our local officials is unjust.

Twenty-five years ago a few of us had a meeting with the Franklin County Economic Development committee. It recommended we come home and get six community-spirited business people with a genuine interest in the general welfare of all Anderson Countians and raise the funds to purchase the old Sherwood farm from the Greer brothers.

Instead our industrial board chose to purchase the old Bond farm on the east side of the Southern Railroad for an industrial park.

In 1987 or 1988, Gov. Wallace Wilkinson and I rode over the Bond farm. He asked, "Is this where they want me to spend $250,000 developing a road for an industrial park?"

The rest is history.

We do not need the added expense of an industrial development expert, but community leadership of local business personnel.

The gem of an industrial park location is gone. We said goodbye to the industrial train 20 years ago.
