A former Anderson County sheriff, magistrate and devoted Lions Club member is dead.
William Harold “Hoot” Birdwhistell, 91, died Monday at Thomson-Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore. He served as sheriff from 1974-78, and magistrate from 1978-82.
“He knew everyone and treated everyone fairly,” said current Anderson County Sheriff Troy Young, who worked as a dispatcher when Birdwhistell was sheriff.
“He was a great hometown sheriff and really good to work with.”
