Kate Wickizer, a senior at Anderson County High School, did not have to wait long to get her big prize Saturday.
After less than an hour in the woods, Wickizer brought down a spike elk in Letcher County. She used a Sako 7mm gun.
Wickizer won the chance to hunt elk in the annual drawing and spent many hours on the shooting range waiting for her big chance.
It only took one shot for her to get the animal, which she got with the help of Mountain Guide Service, run by her uncle, Jim McAuley, of Letcher County.
Wickizer had to pass on a pair of mature bulls, including one 6x6, according to her mother, Bonnie Wickizer. “She only had a spike tage,” Bonnie Wickizer said. “Other bulls were bugling all around them.”
