LEXINGTON -- Sacred Heart went on a 12-2 run to start the fourth quarter, then held off a furious Anderson County rally to post a 49-48 win in girls' basketball action at Rupp Arena Sunday afternoon.
The Valkyries, a perennial state power, made Anderson pay for several crucial turnovers to start the decisive run. Anderson committed 27 turnovers for the game.
"We did some things well and others, we need to work on," said Anderson coach Tony Kays, whose team is now 3-1. "But that is why you play games like this. This game will help us."
Sophomore Kali Whiteside, making her first career start, led Anderson with a career-high 17 points and 12 rebounds. Mackenzie Cann scored 11, all in the second half while Sydney Brown had nine points and six assists.
Morgan Clements led Sacred Heart with 20 points. Monica McGreal added 14.
Anderson returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 14 when the Lady Bearcats host Paul Dunbar. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
