For the second consecutive year, the Anderson County school district has opened mourning the loss of one of its students.

Summer Raine Evans, 8, a student at Saffell Street Elementary School, died Monday in an automobile accident in Woodford County.

“This is a very sad way to start the school year, with the loss of a student,” said Superintendent Sheila Mitchell.

Last year, just before the school year started, Seth Carnahan, 13, a student at Anderson County Middle School, drowned after falling into North Elkhorn Creek in Scott County.

Mitchell said grief counselors are available at Saffell and will be in place the rest of the week to help students and faculty cope with the loss.

Overall, the first day of the school year seemed to be going pretty smoothly, Mitchell said, adding that she had visited all of the schools Wednesday morning.

Mitchell offered her condolences to Summer's family and said the district will continue to provide as much support as needed for its students.

“We’re very saddened by this tragedy,” she said.

Services will be 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 5 at Blackburn and Ward Funeral Home in Versailles with the Rev. Justin Radar and the Rev. Rick Ralston officiating.

Burial will follow at the Lawrenceburg Cemetery.

According to the funeral home’s website, visitation will be today (Wednesday) from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Summer is a daughter of David Rich Evans of Lawrenceburg and Christy Lee Stevens of Versailles.

She is also survived by a brother, David Evans Jr.; two sisters, Autumn Stevens and Spring Evans; and her grandparents, Lou Ann Stevens, Charlotte and Don Southworth, and Ricky Reynolds Sr.

A memorial fund has been set up and donations can be sent to the Summer Evans Memorial Fund, c/o Citizens Commerce National Bank, 534 Marsailles Drive, Versailles, KY 40383.
