The search for the next superintendent of Anderson County Schools is still in full swing, board members said Monday night.
The board met Monday to go into executive session and discuss its current search, but did not expect to name someone as the district’s newest leader just yet, Chairman Lee Hahn said.
The board met June 8 in a work session to discuss the interviewing process, including what questions would be asked of the three finalists for the position.
Mike Oder, of the Kentucky School Board Association, which is assisting the district in its search, declined to release the names of the finalists last week.
The Anderson News filed an open records request Thursday for minutes from all the meetings of the 2010 Superintendent Screening Committee, which was tasked with narrowing down the pool from the original 22 applicants. Though the request was granted, the names of the three finalists were not included in the committee’s minutes.
The screening committee and board of education held a joint meeting June 3, and it is likely the three finalists were revealed in that meeting.
During the June 8 work session, board members said they were happy with the job current superintendent Kim Shaw is doing and wanted to select a candidate who could pick up where the district is now.
“The wheel’s not broken,” Hahn said. “We don’t want to fix it, we just want to keep grease on the axle.”
The board also discussed the salary it would be willing to pay the new superintendent. Though no exact number was determined, the general consensus seemed to be that based on experience and the economy, the new superintendent would make less than the $125,000 Shaw made when he was first hired for the job.
Board members said whoever is selected for the job would be paid a “decent salary,” but acknowledged the new superintendent is getting more than just that.
“It’s more than just a salary,” Hahn said. “[The job comes with] good people to work with and new buildings.”
Considering the unsteady economy as of late, board members agreed that Anderson County is in a good position and, compared to other districts, is not a district in trouble.
Noting the job also comes with immense responsibility, Hahn also said, “you get what you pay for.”
The first round of interviews was expected to take place June 8 through 10.
The board’s regularly scheduled June meeting was moved from Monday, June 21 to Thursday, June 17 because of a scheduling conflict.
Thursday’s meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the board office located on U.S. 127 in front of the new Emma B. Ward Elementary School.
