Pike's career continues with birthday win

By John Herndon

Only 90 seconds stood between Libby Pike and a sour end to her 18th birthday.

The Anderson County backup center was watching from the bench as Simon Kenton forged its second 10-point lead of the the girls' Eighth Region Tournament championship game, but the senior kept her hopes up.

“I had faith in us,” Pike said. “I knew we could still come back.”

Had the Lady Bearcats not made it all the way back, chances are Pike would remember one of those signature birthdays in one's life with a bad memory.

A key reserve who had given Anderson quality minutes in the second quarter of the final, Pike was cheering from the sidelines as her teammates pulled off a miraculous rally.

She, like her teammates, erupted when Eriel McKee's eventual game-winner fell through the net. “She came here to win,” Pike said.

After the initial celebration when the Anderson student section rushed the court, the post-game awards ceremony had to wait. The student section broke out in an impromptu song.

Happy Birthday, dear Libby

Happy Birthday to you.

“I loved it,” Pike said with a smile.

And a championship trophy as a present?

“It was the best ever!” Pike said.
