Ward writers compete to see who has the best grandparents

-A A +A

Students in instructor Lisa Hudson’s fifth grade reading and writing class at Emma B. Ward Elementary completed essays for a writing contest. Students had to write an essay for the AARP Kentucky Grandparent of the Year essay contest and explain why their grandparent should be the AARP Kentucky Grandparent of the Year. The overall winner of the contest was Emily Slone. Her essay will move on to the next level of the contest, according to Hudson. The other essays were chosen as runners up.

I am nominating my grandma, Joyce Moore, for the AARP Kentucky Grandparent of the Year award. She is one of the best people I know, and she deserves this award for countless reasons. Keep reading to see why she deserves this award.
One reason my grandma deserves this award is because she always makes time for us. She has 10 grandchildren so it isn’t always easy to make time for each grandkid alone, but somehow she always finds time. Usually my time to be alone with her is when I spend the night. We watch “Matlock,” “Full House” and “Reba” together. Each grandkid enjoys their alone time with her, because she gives off and radiates happiness that always makes you want to be around her. We all love her a lot.
Another reason my grandma deserves this award is because she is always there for all her grandchildren. She always listens to our problems and gives us solutions to try. When we are sad she comforts us and tries to make us laugh and smile. We can always go to her for advice about anything and she never makes us feel silly for asking, no matter how weird the question or problem. She always keeps our secrets and we can trust her with anything we say. I can go to her for anything.
The biggest reason, even though there are many more reasons, she deserves this award is because she is an awesome role model. She is one of my biggest heroes. She is always willing to help people, even someone she doesn’t know. She always goes to church and never misses a mass.
She never forgets to pray. She always uses her manners, and she always sets a good example.
Even if this essay doesn’t win I know my grandma, Joyce Moore, is the best grandparent ever. She will always have a special place in my heart. I hope you see why she deserves this award.
