Micki Lane Parrish was all set to perform at the upcoming state Junior Miss program.
The senior student at Anderson High had earned the trip by wining the local program in June. She was a member of the advanced chorus, FCA and Beta clubs, had a 4.0 grade-point average and loved to read.

Anderson Fiscal Court took its first steps in buying land for a county park.

Anderson Ladycats did some celebrating after they won the Lawrenceburg Rotary Club Tourney with a heart-stopping 66-64 double overtime decision over highly regarded Boyle County.

Elizabeth Stapp, daughter of Boyce and Gail Stapp, was the Cheerleader of the Week. The sophomore had been cheering for four years, two them on the varsity squad. Her strongest ability was her tumbling and her primary responsibility was base.

Cora Ellen Satterly Cornish, 76, wife of Cecil Cornish and Anderson native; William Ellis Driskell, 90, gauger for 18 years at many local distilleries, former owner and operator of Driskell’s Nursery in Lexington and Lawrenceburg; Lenora Kays Gregory, 82, Anderson County native and member of Goshen Baptist Church; Monnie Nutgrass Waldridge, 95, native of Casey County but lived in Anderson County many years before moving to Louisville; Vincent Bertram Searcy, 81, retired Veterans Administration physical therapist; Etta Toll Noel, 76, retired state bindery worker.

Winning welders in FFA at Anderson High School were Phillip Tracy, first; Johnny Davenport, second; and Dennis Flygstad, third.
Those who recited the FFA creed the best in the competition were: Jeff Stratton, fist; Ronette Schweda, third; and Tracy Cinnamon, second.

Fischer’s Mellwood Bacon was $1.69 a pound at Pic Pac Supermarkets. Colonial sugar was $1.29 for a five pounds. Libby’s fruit cocktail, peaches, pear halves or mixed fruit was 69 cents for a 16-ounce can.

Debra Jean Goins was named to the Dean’s List in the College of Fine Arts at the University of Kentucky. She is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jackie L. Wells of Fox Creek Road.

Anderson News employees Shirley Morgan and Pearl Robinson were honored for years of service. Morgan had been typesetter and circulation direction for three years and Robinson had served the News as bookkeeper for 20 years.

Death
Stanley Perry, 65, retired employee of Fox Creek RECC and member of Corinth Christian Church.

Leroy Trent Casey, 2, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Casey of Fort Chaffee, Ark., suffered severe facial cuts when he fell on a bottle at his home Monday. He was admitted to the hospital and 46 stitches were required to close the wounds.
Mrs. J. B. Lyen and Mrs. Ronald Casey left by plane Wednesday morning to be with Mr. and Mrs. Casey.

Fire destroyed the Sunday school annex at Claylick Methodist Church. The pulpit furniture and pews in the church were saved but would have to be refinished.

Eight Anderson County High students took part in an extemporaneous speaking event, sponsored by the University of Kentucky Student Forum under the direction of their teacher, Mrs. Andrew Bird. Students participating were: Brenda Cammack, Betty McMichael, who won second place; Johnny Giles, Brenda Morris, Paula Monroe, who was defeated in the final round; Mary Flynn and Johnny Stamper, second place winner.

A 1-pound loaf of Sunnybrook Farm bread was 27 cents at A&P Supermarket. Kraft miniature marshmallows were 25 cents for a 10-1/2 ounce bag.

A pictured displayed the danger of the steps at Main and Court Place (now Ollie J. Bowen) during wet and icy weather. It was suggested that a handrail in the center of the steps would be helpful to traffic both directions.

Hansel Thomas Mullins, 52, Anderson County native; Mrs. Dora Brown Taylor, 81, widow of Marion Taylor; Mrs. Frances Mann Auxier, English teacher at Pikeville Junior College for 20 years and five years at Lindsey Wilson; Melvin James Johnson, 58, chef at the Phoenix Hotel, Lexington, for a number of years.
