Wind-whipped flames quickly flattened a house late Sunday afternoon in the Mallard Cove subdivision off Fairmont Road.
The house was destroyed and apparently vacant at the time of the blaze, said Donald Cox, deputy chief of the Anderson County Fire Department.
Cox said the extensive damage to the home would make it difficult to determine what caused the fire.
The fire was called in by a neighbor, who reported seeing smoke coming from the house's roof. Several minutes later, another call to 911 reported seeing flames.
