The Lawrenceburg Pierian Woman’s Club raised $1,057 for Backpack Buddies at a silent auction held during its annual spring luncheon and style show in April, the club announced in a news release.
Backpack Buddies provides easy-to-fix weekend meals and delivers them to Anderson County schools.
Needy children pick up a backpack each Friday and bring back the empty backpack on Monday.
Forty-seven percent of Anderson County schoolchildren rely on free or reduced-price lunches during the week. On weekends, their parents struggle to put meals on their tables.
The program served 225 students last year at a cost of approximately $1,000 per week, with free and discounted food from God’s Pantry in Lexington and Save-A-Lot.
The non-profit Backpack Buddies effort was initiated by the Lawrenceburg First Christian Church and is now supported communitywide by churches, organizations, businesses, scout troops and individuals.
Back Pack Buddies is funded entirely by donations Non-perishable food items may be taken to First Christian Church, 300 S. Main St., Lawrenceburg. Tax-deductible donations may be sent to Anderson County Backpack Buddies c/o Lewis Financial Services, 1048 Eagle Lake Dr., Lawrenceburg KY 40342.
