  • Go beyond ‘at church’ ministry comfort zone

    “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.” (James 1:27)
    First century orphans were typically the children of widows; they were among the downtrodden of society.
    Today the term “orphan” has expanded to include those who have lost their parents, not just to death, but to drug and alcohol addiction, abuse and neglect.

    Sand Spring Baptist
    announces upcoming events
    The Patriot Quartet and the Tribute Quartet will be in concert May 17 at 7 p.m. at Sand Spring Baptist Church, located at 1616 Harrodsburg Road, Lawrenceburg. Love offering will be taken.
    Radio station 770 AM will host a benefit concert May 18 at 6 p.m. at Sand Spring Baptist Church for the organization Send a Kid to Kamp.

    Lawrenceburg Trinity Church of God changes service order
    Lawrenceburg Trinity Church of God is changing the order of its services, according to a press release. Starting Sunday, May 12, Sunday morning worship will begin at 10:30 a.m.
    Then starting on Wednesday, May 15, Sunday School classes will be held starting at 6:30 p.m.

    Westside announces events
    Past events
    On April 3 the church held a Bible Study at 6:30 p.m. and church youth watched the movie “Wreck-It Ralph.” Popcorn and drinks were served.
    On April 7 Westside had Homecoming with singers “Voices of Praise.” “Westside would like to thank everyone for coming and being a part of this special Day,” according to a church release. “We would like to thank everyone that bought food and helped with the servicing of the food and for helping cleanup after.”

  • Jesus alone brings true peace for the distressed

    I read a story about a man named Bill. His wife left him and he became so depressed that his doctor sent him for psychiatric help. Bill told the psychiatrist his difficulties and surmised, “Life isn’t worth living.” The psychiatrist retorted, “Don’t be so rash, Bill; let work be your recovery. I want you to totally plunge yourself in your work. Now, what do you do for a living?” Bill looked even more distraught as he replied, “I clean out septic tanks.” So much for the power of positive thinking!

    Mount Moriah Baptist to hold indoor yard sales
    Mount Moriah Baptist Church, located in Mt. Eden, will be hosting indoor yard sales on the second Saturdays of the month from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to a news release from the church.
    Dates for the yard sales will be May 11, June 8 and July 13.
    Set up will begin at 7 a.m.
    Call Anne at 502-738-5350 to reserve a table. Each table costs $20.
    Proceeds will benefit missions of the church, event organizers said in the release.

  • Where was God during the Boston Marathon bombings?

    Last week we witnessed the unthinkable: thousands of Bostonians, along with thousands of others from around the globe who were gathered to partake in the Boston Marathon, experienced the horror that accompanies a terrorist attack as bombs exploded near the finish line. The graphic scenes are forever burned into our mind, along with the uneasiness that causes us to think, “Could this happen where I live?” After all, who would think of a marathon being a target for terrorism?

    Church kicks off
    ‘Souls 4 Soles’ shoe drive
    Central Baptist Church will be accepting shoes for its 2013 “Souls 4 Soles” shoe collection through the end of May, according to a press release.
    Last year the community donated more than 2,600 pairs of new and used shoes for the drive.
    Shoes may be dropped off at any time at Central Baptist Church, located across from the cell phone tower on 1958 127 Bypass North, or call 502-319-0903 or 502-829-5013 to have someone pick up a shoe donation.

  • Don’t find romantic love in all the wrong places

    In 2008 TIME magazine ran an article titled “Are Romantic Movies Bad For You?”
    The article covered what researchers at Heriot Watt University’s Family and Personal Relationships Laboratory in Edinburgh, Scotland, found when they completed a study of 40 Hollywood romantic comedies released between 1995-2005. They found that problems typically reported by couples in relationship counseling at their center reflect misconceptions about love and romance depicted in Hollywood films.
