    Homecoming at Alton Christian

    Alton Christian Church has scheduled Homecoming service for Sept. 13.

    The service is scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m., with Scott Young as guest speaker.

    Lunch will be served following the service.

    Penny’s Chapel to celebrate

    Penny’s Chapel Community Church will celebrate its anniversary Sept. 20, the church announced.

    Sunday school begins at 10 a.m., followed by a worship service at 11.

    Sand Spring plans 3K run/walk

    Sand Spring Baptist Church will sponsor the “2 Fast 2 Furious” 3K run/walk race to be held Saturday, Sept. 12 from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Anderson County Community Park, the church announced.

    There is no entry fee, but donations will be accepted for local missions.

  • God’s mercy shows up in a variety of forms

    I’m sitting on a couch in Hershey, Penn., with my sister, my daughter and my granddaughter, watching the Food Network and thinking, “How weird is this?”

    We’re here on a partial family vacation since only part of our family is here. My sister flew in from California and my daughter, granddaughter and son-in-law drove up from Virginia. My husband and I flew up from Florida.

    We chose to meet in Hershey because we like chocolate. Also, the children of my husband’s late best friend live nearby and they’ve become family to us.

    Glensboro plans Sunday school program

    Glensboro Christian Church is in the process of restarting its Sunday school program, the church announced.

    Based off the “Close Encounter” curriculum, students who enter the program in kindergarten will cover the major stories and characters of the Bible by the end of their fifth grade year.

    The kickoff for this program will be Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. Contact Jody Stamper at 839-6541 or Matthew Spaulding at 839-4391 with any questions.

  • Bible theme has little to do with man

    Several years ago while speaking to a group of about 70 people I was prompted to ask a question that had intrigued me for years: What is the central theme of the Bible?

    Because I wanted the answers to be individual and not a takeoff from someone else’s response, I had each person first write their response on an index card and then transfer their answers to large pieces of paper I’d hung at the front of the room.

  • Do you know whose inheritance you’re spending?

    Just the other day coming back from Lexington an RV passed me and on the back window was the familiar quote: “I’m spending my children’s inheritance!”

    It got me to thinking about our inheritance as a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ.

    You know that if you are a Bible-believing Christian you have two inheritances. The question for a believing Christian is “Whose inheritance are you spending?”

    Back to schoolservice at Farmdale Baptist

    Farmdale Baptist Church will host a back to school student worship service Sunday, Aug. 16 at 6 p.m., the church announced.

    The guest preacher will be Brian Hinton, Baptist Campus Missionary at Kentucky State University.

    The musical portion of the service will be led by Lexington Road, a student-led worship band from Boyce College.

    A pizza fellowship will follow the service. The event is free, but RSVP to brian@farmdalebaptist.com with the number of students and adults that will be attending.

    Donate underwear, get some BBQ

    A cookout titled “Outback BBQ for Down Under” will be held 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6 at First Presbyterian Church in Lawrenceburg.

    The event is a fundraiser for the school district’s Family Resource Center.

    Admission is a package of underwear, child’s sizes 6 to 12, a pair of sweat pants or pair of shorts, organizers said.

    The church is located at 101 N. Main St., Lawrenceburg.

    Reservations are requested by calling 839-4195.

  • Practice for heaven during dinner with friends

    Generally when my friend Tara and I get together food is both talked about and consumed.

    I taught her my secret to amazing stir-fry vegetables (season them with onion powder and dried red chili flakes), and she introduced me to pad thai and satay at a Thai restaurant.

    Last Saturday, to celebrate her birthday, she and I and our husbands went to a seafood, prime rib and sushi buffet where we, as always, both talked about and consumed incredibly delicious food.
