  • The truth about loyalty to Christ

Anybody remember the second point of the Scout law? Any den mothers, patrol moms, former Boy Scouts or Cub Scouts out there?
“A scout is trustworthy, _____, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. The missing word above and the second point of the Scout law — loyal.

  • Learning God’s lessons while serving in Ecuador

    Greetings, my friends.
I am writing you from Cuenca, Ecuador. What a blessing it is to be able to come and serve God on foreign soil.
I am actually working on a church facility near Tambo, high in the Andes Mountains.
Words cannot express the beauty and tranquility of this place. The people are reminiscient of their Incan relatives of the past. The women wear very bright colored dresses and the men typically wear fancy hats.
Nearly everyone grows their own food in the form of cattle, sheep, goats and chickens.

  • Helping disgruntled readers avoid God’s wrath

I received an email from a reader of mine who doesn’t like “my brand of religion” and who said, “If there is a God, and he is a loving, merciful one, how could he possibly want you [me] as his spokesperson?”
The reader claims I am selling sin and damnation and says I am depressing others. I would like to address all of these concerns.
I do not consider myself to have a brand of religion, even though I am Baptist. I consider the Bible to be the inspired word of God and it is all I rely on to write my column.

  • Don’t pick and choose when God calls

What does your life say about your actual commitment to being person that the God of the Bible calls you to be?
If you stop almost anyone in Anderson County to ask if her or she believes in God, the response would be overwhelmingly affirmative, yet our actions mostly belie our words.
James 2:18: "Yes a man may say ‘You have faith and I have works’; show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.”
