  • Christ’s words show he is God’s equal

    Religion is a funny thing. It often confuses me how some different religions interpret the Bible so differently than I do.
    I have been wrestling toe to toe with a very close friend of a different faith (I am Baptist) over one such difference. My friend’s church contends that Jesus is an angel, subservient to God, and less than God.

    A community free clothes day will be held Sept. 12th, from 2 pm to 6 pm at Salvisa Christian Church, 155 Sugar St., Salvisa.  The clothes are free.

    Open Bible Church hosts free concert
    The Open Bible Church will host a free, teen-oriented concert Sept. 17, beginning at 5 p.m. on the Lawrenceburg Green.
    Bands being featured include GodCry, My Heart Remains, Brian Black and C128.

  • Have you truly sacrificed for God?

    The power.
    The power to destroy all of your enemies.
    The power to be the most important.
    The power to show the world you are the ruler of all.
    Hollywood often portrays powerful, vengeful people as heroes and winners. When you contemplate that Jesus had the power to destroy the world and all of his enemies, to end the lives of the men torturing and spitting on and mocking him, remember this: he didn’t retaliate.
    As the old hymn says, “He could have called 10,000 angels to destroy the world, but he died alone, for you and me.”

    Open Bible offers
    two services
    Open Bible Church will offer two services, one at 8:30 a.m. and one on 10:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings starting Sept. 4.
    Open Bible Church will also host a youth outreach on Sept. 16 at the Lawrenceburg Green.

    Lawrenceburg Church of God holds Labor Day event
    Lawrenceburg Church of God will have a Labor Day service and picnic Sept. 4 at 2390 Benson Creek, off of Alton Station Road.
    The service will begin at 11 a.m. with food, games and music to follow.
    Everyone is invited.

  • Atheists spreading message of nothing

    The atheists are recruiting.
    Let me explain. I absolutely love the Kentucky State Fair. It is something I typically never miss. The weird food, awesome displays of agriculture, the maze of flea market trinkets, etc.
    One thing that absolutely blew my mind this year was a sad and unusual booth I encountered. I was walking by this unattended booth and stopped as it had a statue of Mark Twain, and the back wall was covered with posters of celebrities.

    Camp Calvary to host bow shoot
    Camp Calvary of Mackville will host a 3D Bow Shoot on Aug. 27 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at 475 Camp Calvary Lane in Mackville.  
    The categories include adult bow hunter, adult traditional, youth bow hunter and youth open sights. There will be a full set of trophies and door prizes.
    Cost is $12 per person for 36 rounds. There will also be a free cookout for shooters.
    All proceeds will go to Camp Calvary. For more information, contact Rusty Ruble at 502-600-1020.

  • First Baptist of Berea celebrates anniversary

    First Baptist Church of Berea will observe the 32nd anniversary of their pastor, the Rev. S. K. Cunningham on Aug. 28.
    The guest at the 11 a,m. service will be the Rev. N. A. Kirby of the St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Hopkinsville, according to a news release. The guest at the 3:30 p.m. service will be the Rev. L. A. Wilson of Bethel Missionary Baptist of Lexington.

  • Lukewarm about salvation? God will spit you from his mouth

    I often times question my own salvation, as I think we all do. I sometimes feel as if I am pretty much doing nothing to honor Christ with my life.
    I attend and participate in church, but often don’t feel satisfied that I am doing enough.
    I clearly recognize that one cannot earn their way to heaven as we are saved by grace not works (Ephesians 2:8).
    A true believer is saved by grace that produces works. However I often feel like I fall into the category “lukewarm.”

  • First Christian Church hosts “Called to be a blessing” women’s retreat

    First Christian Church, located on 300 South Main St., will host the “Called to be a blessing” women’s retreat Aug. 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
    It will be a day of renewal through worship, workshops, conversation and food. The keynote speaker is Dr. Connie White, an OB/GYN and women’s health advocate. The special guest is Sean Ramey, who appeared on Season 4 of “The Bachelorette,” and has a sixth degree Tae Kwon Do black belt and is a mugging and rape prevention instructor.

  • You can always count on change

    Every so often my husband gets a certain look in his eye and then says, “Before you say no, hear me out.”
    What comes next almost always involves a stepladder, can of spackle, his drill and a huge mess.
    I remember the time he tore the spare bedroom apart and temporarily stored a bed in the front bathroom. For days I muttered, “There’s a bed in my bathroom!”
