A well-known New Testament story is that of the Rich Young Man who came to Jesus to ask how to inherit eternal life. The man went found that bit of advice depressing because he had a lot of money. The Bible says he was very rich.

  • Prayer lessons from a mud dauber

The other day I walked into my house and found an intruder.
    He looked mean, too.
My husband calls creatures like him mud daubers. They’re a type of wasp, with stingers poised to pierce delicate skin such as mine.
The intruder didn’t seem fazed that he was somewhere he didn’t belong and just buzzed around, probably plotting an attack on my bare arms.

  • Winning conflicts, losing relationships

I’ve recently discovered the secret to getting rid of internal turmoil and stress — I’ve stopped listening to news talk radio and political talking heads shows on TV.
Instead, I listen to my iPod — music and podcasts of sermons and science, food and history. It’s amazing how my inner agitation and anxiety has gone way down, and I haven’t missed a thing. I still know what’s going on in the world — I do work for a newspaper — without having to endure all the yelling.

  • Jesus shows love beyond compassion

Why did Jesus heal the sick and perform exorcisms? In one sense, we could rightly say that Jesus healed the sick and cast out demons because of his compassion.
Matthew 14:14 says, “And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick.”
That is certainly one reason why Jesus healed. But the main motivation in scripture given for why Jesus healed the sick, cast out demons or performed any kind of miracle was to reveal something about who he was.
