  • Recruit kids to help in the kitchen

    I don’t believe in coincidences. When I meet someone or I’m put in a situation that challenges me, I step back and consider why that is.

    Last week, I was talking to my mail carrier about the food column and she suggested I write about kids in the kitchen. Later that same week, I read an article by Jamie Oliver about kids and nutrition and all the wonderful work he has done.

    He has brought a lot of attention to the growing problem of child obesity in regards to processed food, school lunches and advertising.

  • Wedding

    Abigail Grace McLain and Jay Bruce Springate were married on June 25, 2016 in Atlanta.

    The bride, 26, is a native of Atlanta, and is a 2012 graduate of Auburn University. She is employed in Seattle as a counselor/therapist to hospitalized children with serious illnesses. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Lewis McLain of Atlanta, and is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Reeves Johnson of Huntsville, Ala., and of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Polk McLain.

  • It’s 5 o’clock somewhere

    It’s the peak of summer. The countdown begins to the first day of back-to-school shopping. Parents are thrilled and kids want to stretch each day out to put off the inevitable.

    It’s been a busy summer for me and we didn’t get away to some exotic place or even Tennessee. I’m a band mom so in just a few days, my middle child and I will have our summer come to an abrupt end. That doesn’t mean I can’t try to imagine beach sunsets from my back deck. How? Through food and fabulous cocktails, of course.

  • Adams-Chowning engagement

    Danny and Constance Adams of Lawrenceburg announce the engagement and forthcoming wedding of their daughter, Kelly Danielle Adams to William James Chowning, son of Lee and Karen Chowning of Lawrenceburg.

    The wedding is planned for 3:30 p.m. July 16 at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Bro. Gary Drury will perform the ceremony.

    Both the bride and groom are members of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

  • Summer salads are a great way to ‘beat the heat’

    Hope you all had a happy and safe Fourth of July.

    It’s been hot, and it’s about to get hotter. Just the thought of turning on the grill, let alone the furnace (also known as the oven), on a hot day makes us sweat.

    The temptation to eat out, order take-out or just skip dinner altogether is enormous.

    The family of the late William B. Brown had its annual family reunion June 25 at Fairview Christian Church.

  • Births

    Mason Alexander and Aiden Michael Scott were born June 23, 2016, at 8:26 a.m. at Norton Women’s Hospital in Louisville.

    Mason weighed 3 lbs 15 oz and measured 16 inches long at birth. Aiden weighed 3 lbs 9 oz and measured 16 inches long at birth.

    The twins are the sons of Alison and Michael Scott of Louisville.

    They are the grandsons of Mike and Vicky Barch of Lawrenceburg, and Al and Roseanne Scott of Niles, Michigan.

    They are the great-grandsons of Sandra Scott of Largo, Florida, and the late Clyde Scott, Anthony and Delores Sergio.

  • Be a hit at this year’s cookout

    The Fourth of July is almost here and you’ve likely been invited to someone’s house for a cookout.

    You’re probably thinking of something to bring, but you don’t want to be that person with the tray of sliced watermelon, or the sheet cake decorated with blueberries and strawberries in a flag pattern. You want to do something different, be creative, wow them.

  • Soup makes a great summertime meal

    When we think of soup we think of cold winter nights. A big pot of chili simmering for hours on the stove or maybe gallons of chicken noodle to “cure what ails ya.”

    For hundreds of years, people around the world eat certain soups in the summer to cool down and replenish nutrients zapped away by the summer heat.

    Some soups are cold like gazpacho and melon soup, others are served warm or room temperature like summer minestrone.
