  • The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion National Convention was held in Indianapolis on Aug. 24-30.
    This was the 94th National Convention for the American Legion, the 92nd for the Auxiliary and the 41st for Sons of the American Legion.
    Attending from Lawrenceburg were Unit President Betty Butler, Vice President Pam Rice and Historian Shirley Thornberry. Post 34 Commander Bobby Thornberry and SAL member Shannon Hubert also attended.

  • Cynthia Finnell, Talitha McGoff and Erich Steilberg, children of Carolyn and Richard Steilberg, planned a surprise celebration for their parents’ 50th anniversary.
    The celebration was disguised as, and included, a family reunion.
    The event, which took place Sept. 1 in the park in Lawrenceburg, was announced in last week’s Anderson News as the family reunion, which listed special guests.
    The couple was married Aug. 17, 1962.

    Sept. 20, 1962
    A dedication of the new building and a homecoming was held at the Van Buren Baptist Church.
    The Rev. Lewis Searcy, pastor of the Verona Baptist church and former pastor at Van Buren, delivered the sermon. Assisting in the dedication was the Rev. Paul Clubb, Shepherdsville, also a former pastor.
    The new concrete block building containing a sanctuary and approximately 10 classrooms was begun in 1958. The church was organized in 1950 and met several years in the old Van Buren schoolhouse.

  • Farmdale Baptist Church voted in its business meeting Sept. 5 to call Brian Owens as its associate pastor with Children and Youth Emphasis.
    Owens is from Lawrenceburg, and is currently pursuing a Master of Divinity in Christian Ministry from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
    Before coming to Farmdale, Owens served as pastor of churches in Shelby and Martin counties. He and his wife, Melinda, are the parents of five children. Owens will oversee Farmdale’s children ministries and lead the youth ministry.

  • Landon “Pudden” and Janelle Clark of Frankfort announce the engagement and upcoming marriage of their daughter, Jennifer Martin Clark, to Brandon Allen Mitchell, son of Robert Mitchell and Teresa Mitchell of Willisburg.
    The bride is a 2007 graduate of Western Hills High School and MedTech class of 2012, where she received an associate’s degree in applied health science. She is currently employed with Dermatology Associates of Kentucky as a clinical assistant.

  • Carolyn and Richard Steilberg, Cynthia and Adam, Talitha and Reed and Erich Steilberg, as well as the families of the late Brunelle Flynn Casey and the late Marcella Lampton Steilberg Parnell, hosted a family reunion Sept. 1 in the county park.

  • Dude and Donna Caldwell of Lawrenceburg announce the engagement and upcoming marriage of their daughter, Brandi Lynn Caldwell, to Billy Joe Cook, Jr., son of Billy Cook, Sr., and Regina Cook of Frankfort.
    The bride is a 2001 graduate of Anderson County High School. The groom is a 2002 graduate of Western Hills High School.
    The wedding will take place on Oct. 13, 2012.
     

  • 50 YEARS AGO
    Sept. 13, 1962
    Mountjoy’s Crown Jewel placed first in the American Saddle Horse Breeders Futurity of Kentucky at the State Fair, winning $1,463.63.
    The winning entry formerly owned and shown by Billy Mountjoy was sold in July to Blue Lake Stables of Newbury, Ohio. Mountjoy had nine weanlings out of the 134 nominated for the event, but showed only three.
